After being very impatient about the first egg our chickens will lay! And after researching that it was normal for them to be a little late, one of our chickens finally lay one egg just on time for my birthday!!!
Got our first egg on Saturday! Last 2 days began with 1 waiting in the Egg Box - to complete their first dozen! I'm writing date and Chick name on each, if known, and keeping a chart - which includes location of the egg laid with the date. and color. I believe 4 of our 7 large breed birds are laying. Waiting on 2 Barred Rock and a shy Jersey Giant to start. The PBRs get annoyed when I try to keep them from the layer feed. Today I set out 2 separate feed bowls and will watch to see who is most interested in each. I've sprinkled crushed eggshells daily since the first egg - and layers seem to want more. Hope the last 3 get moving soon, so they don't ingest too much calcium for their lil kidneys. One is my lead chick - quite a pig around any food and she's getting big! I hope egg production will help regulate weight gain.
awww that is a great idea about writing the date on the egg! for me it was remarkable and unforgettable because it was on my birthday ! you seem like a lovely and dedicated chicken mom!!! congrats!!!
