Hanna has had it tough and I finally gave the old girl her own side of the coop, for some piece and quiet. She was last in the pecking order and got her but feathers plucked off by the other three females. Since she only shares this side with Lucy and Lucille Ball is busy setting on a clutch of eggs, Hanna had time to recover and wait for her next molt to bring back her feathers. However, she now has a new problem and I will have to look this one up. Note the lump on her chest protruding from HER right front side, which looks to be on the left as she faces us? Someone said it might be an impacted crop. What can I do about it? She is plucking out her own feathers so it must be uncomfortable.
Permaculture at its best! all manner of vegetables randomly planted here. Spinach, squash, cucumbers, and around the boxes are tomatoes, sage, rosemary, lavender, and a peach tree that has really produced this year. They are falling all over! Note the netting which keeps out birds and curious dogs. I only wish we grew all our own food. This is more for display purposes at this point, to inspire others.

Never the less, sparrows and finches know our pond will provide a regular supply of welcomed cool water, stocked by 25 mosquito eating carp (all gold fish are carp BTW.) The background shot features our two-sided chicken coop. We put umbrellas over the suspended chicken feeders to keep wind and rain from wetting them.
Meanwhile, Lucy has 3 eggs she is still on. She has broken one and cast it aside. One wonders if they can feel the chick inside and know when it's dead or not. I did set up baby feed and water sets near by, in case the little boogers actually do make it. She is trying so hard, but this is her first time and it's already fall. She may just have to broody up again in spring and give this one up. Another week, just to make sure, and for sure they will be too old. Poor mama. She really wanted to be one.

Blondie or ZhaZha lays green eggs. So although they have 5 laying boxes they seem to fight over this one box and kick each others' eggs out. Anybody have a cure for that? I can't keep making separate coops for each PMSing hen! Great looking egg, huh? So now you know what he meant when he said Green Eggs and Ham. The eggshell color, silly!

ZhaZha I thought was a Delaware at first. She's a cutie. She is due for some new feathers soon and has possibly been pecked on by mean old Blondie. I hope molting is coming soon. I just discovered she might be a white Araucana. Rare. Exciting. Olive green eggs~
