We'd read that brief dips encourage preening afterwards, which stimulates their oil glands and helps them get "waterproof" sooner. It seemed to work like a charm. The little guy in front got named Rex since my son thought he had T-Rex feet. Later Rex became Rexy when she started laying eggs!

The goslings were easily twice as big as the ducklings, but everyone got along fine. We discovered that's something we really like about waterfowl - no pecking order!

They were curious about the food right away and soon started eating. The first duckling to get named was the one in front. Since his feet looked like scuba fins, Finn it was. Finn grew up to be a friendly and gentle drake with near-perfect markings.

Day One. An amazed-sounding woman from the post office called at 4:30 AM saying, "Your box is peeping and there are little bills sticking out of the holes!" We rushed down to pick them up, then rushed home to put them into the waiting brooder. To our tremendous relief they all seemed fine. There were six Blue Swedish, three Black Swedish, and two American Buff goslings. They'd had a long journey from Metzer Farms in California to central Iowa.

For their first experience with water, we let them stand on rocks to start and then get wet when they were ready. Some jumped right in, while others had to think about it for quite a while.

At one year, everyone's fat and happy and now have the run of the place. We've learned so much and plan to get some Buff ducklings this summer. Thanks for looking at our little flock.
