Any update with your situation? I have a flock of five and the same thing happening. We're in the middle of a blizzard and I had to bring my molting hen into the basement - they were starting to draw blood. :( I just don't know how long to keep her separated (and am worried about reintroducing her).
I'm curious how things are going for you. I had some feather picking start back in January and it's only getting worse. 5 of my 6 girls have bare bums, and now 3 of the 6 also have some bare spots on their backs. I have seen one culprit, but because the damage is so widespread, I have to believe...
My girls developed bare bums over the past two months, and after adding more entertainment and protein to their run, I've decided I have to treat for mites. Now that it's warm enough, I was planning on spraying both my hens and the coop with permethrin (diluted liquid), but we do also have a...
I don't have any answers, but I have three hens with the same issue right now. I don't see evidence of mites or lice so haven't treated for that, but I've been putting Pick No More on their bare bums every other day or so. (Unfortunately, everyone seems to be taking turns picking the bare...
This is an older thread, but I first just wanted to say WOW to your set-up. I can't imagine chickens being bored in there. Also, I'm going out of my mind with feather picking (three naked butts; no chance to heal; seems everyone's in on the new awful game of butt pecking), and I'd love to hear...
Curious if the above poster was correct - was your black "Blue Plymouth Rock" a cockerel? We also got one grey and one black from TSC (both labeled Blue Plymouths), but we're 2 months behind you (got them in late June).
My 7.5 week old pullets (not free ranging yet) seem obsessed with the Japanese maple leaves falling around around their run - they try to grab them through the hardware cloth, and they eat the ones that come in the door as we go in and out, often stuffing them down whole like they are in a hot...
We had one who at times seemed half the size of the other 5. I noticed she did not like to eat out of the feeder (would only scratch for loose crumbs), so I started giving them all some wet food (chick starter mixed with water, initially with some olive oil, too). She is now still smaller than...
I'm so happy to have found this forum - reminds me of when I had newborns (human, that is) and scoured the internet for all my crazy questions! This place seems to have all the answers for my feathered newborns (2 weeks old yesterday). My family and I are new to chickens. We've spent a while...
