    Wild Turkey Eggs In Incubator

Good luck to you, too! Mine took 29 days to hatch from the time it was taken from the nest, but I think that it was a fresh nest, as shattered eggs didn't even have visible blood spots.

    Wild Turkey Eggs In Incubator

Quote: I just found this post, I know It's been a few years for you, but any advice for raising a wild turkey? We found a wrecked nest on our property, only one intact egg, put it under a broody hen, finished it off in the incubator. Now I have a wild turkey that's 3 days old. I have ~16...

    Campine Chicken thread?

HI I just found this thread......Campines are my favorite breed....I have 8 other breeds, too. Ok, I only have one pullet, Heidi, but she's our favorite. I'm happy that there are other folks who agree!

    Salmanella-Need proper info

As I said, the jury is still out on this serovar of Salmonella, having first appeared in significant #s in the 1980's, coincident with massive factory farming operations. For the latest info, check the CDC's website. They will provide links to original, peer-reviewed research on this organism...

    Salmanella-Need proper info

Wow, those are tall orders! I think that the jury's still out on this strain of Salmonella......suffice it to say that commercial "farming" practices invite new and more virulent diseases. Nobody with free ranging chickens can say that they are Salmonella enteritidis (SE) free, even if they...

I have to destroy my entire flock. I need a very humane way

We've had to euthanize one pullet---w/ Marek's disease. An old self-proclaimed chicken farmer told us to use starter fluid, which contains ether. We put our sick Cochin into a plastic cat litter bin, sprayed a liberal amount of starter fluid, then closed the lid. She just "went to...

    salmonella risks?

Quote: I like all of your practices! That's great animal husbandry, and very useful! There is alot of hype, but this type of Salmonella hasn't been seen much prior to the establishment of the big factory "farms" in the 1980's. Similar to E. coli O157:H7 (Jack-in-the-box), it has been...

    The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Quote: Thank you!!! I'm feeling better (about my evil thoughts) already..... For years I've been locked in a loop, kind of like a badly written program, about making a distinction between pets and livestock. I know that keeping a backyard flock involves culling to achieve certain goals, and...

    The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Quote: That is so funny...... I'm sure it wasn't then, tho. Anyhow, what does "Freezer Camp" mean? I'm thinking that one or more of my 5 month old cockerels might be getting scholarships there, too.......but they are not certain how to apply.

What about the [Butler] county fairgrounds?

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm looking forward to a swap/meet.......I now have 4 cockerels instead of 3, far too many for only 11 pullets and 2 hens, as sexing of day-old chicks is only 90% accurate they say, and they are correct.

    Good treats for baby chicks?

hey, Mushroomman......do you actually seek and eat wild shrooms? I'm in Gibsonia.....we have lots of North facing wooded slopes, previous owners logged out the big oaks, lots of rotting oak and cherry stumps....they were probably cut about 7 years ago.....I see all kinds of shrooms and would...

Pullet not walking, laying limp in coop, help please

That's a good link, pwand. My little pullet probably died of Marek's: onset at 8 weeks....maybe, that period of time is what it takes for tumors to grow and interfere w/ the neuromuscular system. Those Herpesviruses are sinister! I thought they only infected mammals, but obviously not. No...
