    Free ranging in snow?

Haven't seen anyone mention it, but when the snow falls, the hawks get hungry and a flock of chickens against a white background can be mighty tempting. As you can see, we get a bit of snow out here ourselves. You can just see the top cornier of the south side coop peeking out from behind...

    bantam rooster contest!!!

This is Lance.......with the bicycle pants (his leg feathers are all black and look like cycling shorts), and a racing helmet. He's a ten month old Gold Laced Wyandotte bantam, but he thinks he's much bigger.......gives our full size Barred Rock rooster hell. If you turn your back on him...

    Rooster Contest!

I love some of the interesting names as much as the roos, so here's my humble offering......... 'Lance, with the bicycle pants' (and racing helmet), a Golden Laced Wyandotte Bantam cockerel...... 'King Lear', apparently a cross between a Silver Laced Wyandotte and I don't know what ...

I'm interested to see how that hardware cloth floor and poop tray work out for you. My guess would be that you'll have to brush it clean regularly to prevent clogging and the tray will be a bit heavy and unwieldy to empty unless you do it quite often, but that would just be a guess. I hope you...

    Run floor question

That's what we did, let them take the grass out and then add the wood chips. We did not put any gravel down, though because as this material breaks down we intend to use it in the garden and replace with new......gravel would just be in the way and is not really necessary for drainage if the...

    Run floor question

We have a good sized run, 14 X 20 feet, and get a lot of rain and snow. The floor of our run is sloped a bit, and we got several yards of wood chips for free from a tree trimming service. They trim along power lines in rural areas, like ours, and are more than happy to give the stuff away. We...

    What's up with this guy?

The comb on this one does stand up, and it has spurs as well, though they are small.

    What's up with this guy?

Really? This bird has spurs, crows, covers, has the occasional run in with our other two roosters......everything a rooster does, and does not lay eggs......of course that part would make sense if 'she' is older The other four are all at least old enough to lay eggs, but we have no idea how old...

    What's up with this guy?

My wife and I recently rescued about 50 chickens from some horrible conditions on a farm where the owner was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Among them were four brown leghorn hens and one brown leghorn rooster. I've never seen brown leghorns before, but all the pictures of the roosters...
