I'm pretty sure this is a cockerel, but just wondered if someone could verify for me. He was hatched on August 13th--dad is our Speckled Sussex, Arthur, and we think the mom may have been our Copper Maran, who is now deceased. This is the first time we've ever had our own chicks hatched by our...
I have a Pekin duck, Ernie, and a Black Swedish duck, Olivia, who are both laying eggs. They both lay white eggs. I never have two white eggs on one day--or at least I can't find any. The eggs are pretty much laid in the the coop or pen they go into at night. How can I tell the difference...
Thanks so much. I thought so too--sadly, tonight when I counted chickens in the barn--one of these babies is missing. Not a good sign.
I'll have to take a picture of the other two--I think one is a little rooster and I just want to see if I am able to tell. WIll try to take their picture...
Okay--I tried to get pictures of at least two of the chickens. They are almost 9 weeks old in these pictures. I doubt you can tell--they wouldn't stand still! But--any hope of being able to guess if either of them is a rooster? (Dad is a Speckled Sussex and Mom is either a Black Australop or a...
Ok. Well, we just moved them into their brand new digs inside the new barn--they can still get out to free range during the day, but they come in the barn at night--and we put a light on until 10:00 PM. The three duck hens--who were born the same time as these chickens--all laid an egg today...
OK--I'll try to get some pictures and do just that. Thank you for the suggestion. Really hoping they aren't little roos--but, we'll see. Right now, our rooster, King Arthur tolerates them in the flock and even sits beside them--he also helped feed them when they were younger. So, wishfully--I'm...
I also have questions about nesting boxes for ducks and have read with interest the replies posted here. We have 3 females that may be laying---a Mallard, a Black Swedish, and a Peking. they were all born on May 1st. We have had duck eggs--started having them with regularity about 3 weeks ago...
We have four chicks hatched out naturally by their moms. Two of them are 12 weeks old and on their own--in the flock with their mom, but mom is not caring for them any more----and two of them are 10 weeks old and mom is still taking care of them. Their father is a Speckled Sussex and their...
I'm wondering if chickens of the same breed follow pretty much the same pattern-----for example, my Splash Maran hen, Fiona, had her chicks on August 13th of this year. She was an absolutely terrific mom and ferocious when it came to protecting them. But, at right around 8 weeks, she pushed them...
But, if we put a light on in the barn, where they sleep at night, on a timer--will that help? We have 2 other chicks that came with her--born the same day--a Rhode Island Red (Rose) and a Plymouth Barred Rock (Daisy) and neither of them are laying yet either. All 3 chicks were born on May 1st.
Well, after you get your coop set up (and I agree--sometimes there can be too many suggestions!)--and have it as predator proof as you know how to make it--honestly--get yourself some of the Night Guard predator alerts and you'll be amazed. We have one on all four sides of the coop. Works wonders.
Wow! Hope you are able to start things over right and enjoy chickens again. Let me tell you that we live in Vermont--We have a small flock--14 hens of different breeds and one rooster. They all free range during the day and go into their coop at night. Their coop is out in the pasture--closest...
