I just put my Ladies First door on today, works well. My ladies are only 10 weeks old so the only bird to use it an Australorp. Hopefully the rest of the flock will get the idea and start using it before the snow starts to fly.
My birds get it both ways, in the front of my open air coop, they get construction sand with diatomaceous earth separated with a 2x6 from the chips in the rest of the coop. Chicks are 3 weeks old.
I've been using play(ground) sand for a few years, I switched to construction sand which is bit larger, and cheaper. I also mix diatomaceous earth in with it.
Earlier in the thread I said I didn't free range my birds because of coyotes, there's been numerous posts about dogs being the reason for a lot of posters. With me it's just the opposite, my dog, Border Collie/ Aussie has never hurt one of my birds. Even though I had a Banty rooster who would...
I had coyotes decimate my free ranging flock a couple years ago. In another month when snow is gone I'll be renewing the fence and posts.
it's 100 foot field fence circling the coop. I might be including electric. strands on the bottom.
My dog alerts me to coyotes from there it's my...
I tried free ranging my birds a few years ago, coyotes decimated them. I put 60 feet of fence around my coop. Now I just have owls and hawks to deal with. I had to do it not just for the birds, I don't need coyotes coming in a q quick meal and going after my dog either. I've got 3K acres of...
Good article I wish I'd seen this last year, I had a plywood brood area set up in my wood's open air coop, with older birds outside the brooder. One of the birds managed to knock the heat lamp off it's perch and burnt a hole through two sheets of plywood which is the coop floor, I'm lucky I...
I used to wear a half face North 7700 mask when I did my coop, needless to say now with the china virus you can't find one. What I wear when I'm bailing hay and will use for this week's coop cleaning is an RZ mask, they are still in stock in limited quantities.
They do filter 99% of .1...
Great article,
I'm currently at 50% Rooster amiability.
I had a Banty rooster that had the worse attitude I've even seen, I think it was him being the smallest of the flock. He actually attacked my dog, a Borde Collie/Aussie. Needless to say he didn't win that encounter.
Now I have a Buff...
I use the direct method also, I go around the bucket and press the nozzles so water collects on nipple catch basin. Then I'll choose the one that seems the most intelligent, press her beak against the nipple.
I used to sit in the coop and wait until they all figured it out. Now I see one use...
My birds used to knock over my 5 gallon bucket with horizontal nipples a lot this summer.
I have a swaging tool, so I measured to the roof and crimped ends on 3/16 cable and put carabiners on, one to the handle another to the screw hook in the rafter.
Now they can jump on it all they want...
To answer the questions posed. My reason for inquiring about solar was predicated as being a cost savings.
I already have electric run to the coop, as to the two buckets, 10 gallons of water, one of their favorite games was jumping up on the buckets and knocking them over. I solved this by...
To answer the questions asked. I was contemplating the switch to solar simply as an economical measure. I have electric run to the coop, so water and light are taken care of.
The birds drink as much water as I do. It was their fun time to jump up on the buckets and knock them over until I...
