Thanks to all the constructive feedback received here, I decided not to keep either roo. But I sure did want to keep the Orpington!
Eventually we’ll add another 4-6 to the flock but the timing just isn’t good. Had both knees replaced this year and the 2nd is making me slow to bounce back as...
You’re right, 2 roos would be too much for our flock especially since only 4 are standard breeds.
So glad I asked for input here. Received excellent feedback that my gut was already trying to tell me. I just had to read objective facts from those who know and care about chickens.
Thanks!
Yes the large coop has plenty of space. It could probably handle an additional 10-15 chickens. We just don’t want that many.
Thanks!
Thanks, good points to seriously consider.
Neighbors died and their young (3-4 months old) flock of 20 (all standards, mixed breeds) (18 hens, 2 roosters) is being rehomed to a city that doesn’t allow roos.
One of the boys is a big beautiful grey Orpington, and the other is a smaller white Leghorn. The leghorn seems to be somewhat of...
Thanks for the reply. Had knee replacement surgery 2 days before your reply and had been out of it for a while.
I miss walking down our hill and hanging with the our flock. But the situation has made my husband become quite attached to our hens! So that’s a good thing :)
I also had not heard of...
It’s a 6’ tall, vinyl coated 2” square hog wire-like fence, and goes 6” underground. And yes she was found right next to it
(Not sure how I didn’t see your post sooner, sorry.)
We still only let them out of their coop if we are in yard.
Hmm I didn’t know foxes did that, Mother Nature is cruel. 40+ years living in same house, in a suburb of Los Angeles CA, coyotes and raccoons are the wildest creatures near us. Our fence is made of thick nonbendable welded wire that’s buried 6” underground. And my dogs didn’t behave or react as...
Our first casualties ever. Flock (9 hens now 7) 1.5 years old, 4 different breeds. Out of town for first kill, our favorite, was a black silkie 😭 Housesitter said she was mostly eaten. I didn’t look at her yet, (had them put her in freezer). Two days later, an almost 1 year old egger just coming...
Wow thanks for the comprehensive suggestion! I will definitely look into the treadle feeder.
By any chance do you know if the silkies would get trapped? They are average size for the breed.
Darn it was hoping foraging all day was helpful. So we’ll have to get probably triple feed before leaving town because squirrels will eat much of it. 😩
Looting squirrels have made it necessary to put feed away during the day.
Our flock consists of 6 standard 1 silkie hens, almost 18 months; 2 silkies hens, about 9 months
They’re let out early am and put to bed at sunset. We check them at least a few times a day (when not working in the yard)...
So are you saying the bbgun won’t take out a rodent? Cus I got excited when I read Bigtom Turkey’s post. A 22 would be too loud for my hood, only a single acre away from neighbors. Either way these jerk squirrels are looting way too much feed and stealing eggs daily.
Messed up my last reply/post. Fluffy came out for maybe a month. Now she’s back to being broody. And we’re out of town again. Perhaps she’s protesting our absence.
