    Lost to a predator today...

I was devastated when this afternoon, when I turned out my hens to free range in our front yard, only 7 of my 9 hens came out the gate. When I started looking, my Ameracauna was cowering under the hen house, and Pixie, my smallest hen, had been reduced to a pile of feathers, feet, head, and...

Just looking for sympathy... hawk took silkie

Quote: I am so sorry to read of your loss, and I can unfortunately share in your sorrow, because today I lost my smallest hen to a predator. It is such a devastating thing to have to go through. I only had 9 hens, and I nursed little Pixie through a sick spell, and she was such a sweet...

    Hawk deterrent?

I was devastated this evening, when I discovered my smallest hen was killed by something, not sure if it was a hawk. All that remained of my dear little Pixie was some bones, feet, and her feathers and head. If a hawk would have gotten her, would there have been blood spattered about? There...

Will my fence be too low? Too near trees?

Quote: yes it is too low, the brats will fly over and the oleander is poisonous (get rid of it) they can get the poison on their feet and feathers and ingest it with out actually eating it and die. Yes, I agree completely, the oleander really should go...it is very poisonous....just not...

    What breed is this?

Oh my goodness, is there really such a thing as an ugly chicken?? I love them all!! Never have seen an ugly one, unless we are talking about some of those moulting ones, but that is just temporary! ;-)

    please reassure me

Quote: Definitely a moult, and what a lovely one you have! Love that comb!

I found her! Update: Moving didn't go too well... Update # 2....

Quote: Where is Schulenburg? Glad you got some rain. After being way too wet early this summer, we haven't had measurable rain since July. Hard on the crops.... Schulenburg is this little Texas town with 2,752 or so residents, almost exactly halfway between San Antonio and Houston, just off...

New addition to flock seems scared to death

Hopefully, in time things will work themselves out. It is really tough on the new one when only one is introduced to an established flock. Free-ranging is definitely an advantage, since there are plenty of places to escape to. Plus your new silkie has the disadvantage of being smaller than...

    Beak

If her upper beak is too long, it could certainly interfere with being able to eat. I have not had this problem with any of my chickens; however, I do have an Eclectus parrot, whose beak we have had to trim . The first time we took her to an avian vet who charged $20 just for the beak trim...

    Undecided about a rooster

Do you think you would ever want to raise your own chicks? This is a hard call. I have a rooster that I saved from the stew pot. A friend at work was going to have him for dinner, and he was my first chicken. I have heard that if you want a rooster to run with the girls, you should have 10...

    Do Roosters Molt?

Yes, as does any creature with feathers! With our parrots in the house, there are always one or more feathers to be found!

    antisocial barred rock

How many other chickens do you have? Could this one be at the bottom of the pecking order? My bottom gal does tend to stay by herself more than any of the others, I guess she just does not want to be pecked....

I found her! Update: Moving didn't go too well... Update # 2....

I do agree with moving her, too much could happen to her if not protected. Prayers for rain have been answered in Schulenburg, we were blessed with 2 inches!
