Whatever works and is cheap is my mantra. Chickens only care about food, water, and safety from predators. If it accomplishes that, the chickies will be happy.
I built a coop from eight wood pallets (some cut and removed the slats to close up the sides) and some scrap lumber, and left over roofing shingles from our house reroof. Picked up the door (cut in half and mounted a bottom edge) and wood flooring panels (all free). Majority of the cost were the...
I had one chick survive for 3 days, it too passed.
Good news, the breeder used their newer and non-styrofoam incubator and hatched out 12 chicks for me. They are so far doing great and are eating and drinking machines, well, they are some serious waste makers too.
Thanks for asking.
I'm building one from pallets, they are 40" x 48". Mine is 4' x 6'. Just roofed it, I need to finish the sides, then the roots, etc. All free wood and the door. Shingles are extras from my 3 year old roof replacement.
With water in the troughs and a wet sponge, never went over 53%, until the second chick hatched, went up to 56%. I believe it is wrong from the beginning. I went in, removed some shell, touched the beak, it didn't move. I put it back in and will keep an eye it for a while longer.
I went in and pulled the egg, using tweezers, I peeled back some shell towards the air sack location. I decided to touch the tip of the beak a couple times. No movement. I'm sure it passed late yesterday or last night. I put it back in the incubator in a safe spot, I will monitor for a couple...
My first egg to pip through shell 24 hours ago hasn't progressed. Beak is showing but no zipping and is just there. Another egg pipped and zipped about eight hours later, hatched last night and is running around owning the incubator kicking and rolling all the other eggs around. How much longer...

I had issues with a neighbor feeding squirrels so her and her grandson could watch those cute fuzzy animals. Well, they used my fence as a squirrel highway. I built a trap and removed many squirrels that would never return, yet, other squirrels kept coming. Once they learn the location of food...
