    Cannot drain ascites (water belly)

They mostly forage throughout the day. I give them fermented layer grain in the morning and there are hanging feeders under the coop with Nature’s Best layer crumbles. They have free access to the crumbles but they don’t hang there.

    Cannot drain ascites (water belly)

Do you think it’s possible that her adipose tissue was so thick that the 3/4” needle isn’t a sufficient length to pass through it? I recently butchered a hen that we had to put down due to impacted crop, and she had a LOT of fatty tissue.

    Cannot drain ascites (water belly)

She was in the nesting box overnight and the entire day. I thought she was broody but noticed how swollen her belly was. I stuck my finger in her vent to see if she was eggbound. No egg. Not particularly lethargic other than being in the nesting box. When I had her in the garage yesterday...

    Cannot drain ascites (water belly)

I have a hen that has water belly, no question. I bought an 18 gauge, 3/4” syringe and attempted to drain the fluid as in the video below. It would NOT drain and all we encountered was resistance when trying to draw the syringe. After examination of the little we did extract, it appeared to be...

Broody but not broody! So confusing.

Oh aren’t you cute inserting your little judgmental comment at the end. Healthy appetite, drinks plenty behaves like a broody EXCEPT for ruffling and growling. Plucked belly feathers like a broody. Sits on eggs like a broody. When in jail stands A LOT (not like a broody OR A CHICKEN WHO IS...

Broody but not broody! So confusing.

No she’s not hiding. Coop is 12x12 plenty of room and she doesn’t get picked on.

Broody but not broody! So confusing.

I have this Barred Rock hen that keeps going in the nesting box and staying. BUT she doesn’t do the ruffled feathers/growling thing. So I put her in broody jail (coated hardware cloth as a floor and fan blowing through). She stands most of the time (not broody behavior). Had her in there for...

Impacted crop, complete and total lethargy

Thanks. I did not see anything unusual in her crop. Nothing with organs looked off. No odd smell. She was a good layer…had lots of yolks ready to go in her. Sad. I’ve done necropsies before with sick chickens but I decided just to process her since it seemed her demise was not related to...

Impacted crop, complete and total lethargy

Nevermind. I put her down. I don’t think she had a chance and was suffering.

Impacted crop, complete and total lethargy

I have a hen that seems to have an impacted crop. She’s completely lethargic, eyes closed. I’ve massaged her crop sever times today but there’s no way she’s taking any oil to help. She seems to far gone to hold upside down. Should I just put her down or is there anything that can be done?

    Is hemp TOO absorbent?

They come out around 7:30…I have it set to open 30 min after sunrise. Never had a problem with predators in the morning as we are usually out and tossing around fermented grain for them. Lost several to hawks mid-day tho. Anyway, the problem is they all roost in the same small area. So things...

    Is hemp TOO absorbent?

Hey sorry for the delay. I took a video of my coop. I had a mold problem. I’ve finished getting rid of mold with vinegar, priming everything with mold-killing primer and painting with 2 coats of barn paint with mildecide added. Anyway, here is the video of the coop. I really would like to...

    Is hemp TOO absorbent?

I’m out of town for the weekend so I’ll post some pics when I get back. The floor is wood but it is coated with two coats of rubber coat roofing sealant so it does not absorb water.

    Is hemp TOO absorbent?

It’s like 4” deep in most places. We were trying deep litter with almost 12” but it didn’t work so we removed most of it. The chickens never dig around in the coop. I guess I’m order for it to work you can’t let them free range? Or keep them closed in for a few hours in the morning? I dunno...
