4 wk old Orpington chicks - girls or boys??

Hi, I have x4 mixed Orpington chicks which are now 4 weeks old and were about 3.5 weeks old in the pics attached. Any help determining gender would be greatfully received as my sons are becoming increasingly attached and we can't keep the roosters so I need to start managing expectations!! So...

Too early to come off heat?

Ok thanks that is really helpful. We just put the heater up to it's highest level today so maybe they just couldnt all squeeze under before. I will start introducing them to the great outdoors in a week or so and bring them in overnight back to the lamp. Thank you!

Too early to come off heat?

Hi I am using a Brinsea Ecoglow and my 4 Orpington chicks who are three weeks old have stopped going under it, they are hanging out in the run which is in our outhouse and never seem to be under the heater, in fact they seem to sleep in a heap in the furthest corner... are they ready to go...

Hi bltsgirl I have just been through my first broody hatch experience a week ago so I am no expert but here is what I have learnt ... my broody Dolly (a wyandotte) was the bottom of pecking order so we moved her into her own little coop - an Eglu classic - to sit as she was very stressed out...

Adoption in the early stages with teething problems - what should I do?

Thanks for the reply, this afternoon she started pecking one of the new chicks because they dared to come outside so I think maybe this was not destined to be! Off to buy a heat lamp we go.. impromptu brooder set up inside!! At least this way I get to watch them grow up but I have no idea how...

Adoption in the early stages with teething problems - what should I do?

Hello I am a complete newbie to this forum business so please excuse any faux pas! A week ago we had 2 chicks hatch from 9 eggs which My silver laced Wyandotte, Dolly, has been faithfully brooding. The eggs were a mixture of some cross breed from a friend and 6 silkie eggs from the internet...

    Lucky baby chicks Adoption Success!!!

This is such a lovely story to read and very encouraging ... I just joined BYC this evening for support due to anxiety over adding 6 day old chicks to a Mamma hen who already has x2 6 day olds (the rest of her eggs failed). Am very nervous for them!! Fingers crossed we get a lovely positive...
