Her feathers are missing on a patch in front of her tail and the area has a scabby, rough appearance.
What is happening to my poor girl?
On lighter news 2 of the 3 (out of 4) of them gave me my first eggs.
It is both a recommendation and necessary... sort of.
Chicks don't have feathers and will get cold very easily, which is why mom lays on them all the time. As they grow quickly and develop more feathers, mom lets them wander around longer.
The babies will tell you if it's too hot; if they...
Thanks, I will consider extra rungs, but they are still to young to be out at night; it still gets into the 40's and they aren't quite fully feathered.
4" is the minimum size for any fill valves I've ever seen. This system will use 2 push-in nipples on 3/4" PVC.
I installed the water and feeding parts today.
The only parts I need to add are the nipples and the pipe. The highest I can do the nipples is about 21". Does everyone think that is sufficient or should I go lower; 18-21" seems to be the preferred range around here?
For anyone interested...
I have Four 3-week old chicks: Barred, Orpy, RIR, and the Leghorn.
The Leghorn, I think, is the pariah in the group: she is constantly being chased by the RIR and the Barred, she is the only chick that scratches the bottom of the brooder, she is the only chick that attempts to scratch from the...
I got my first chickens this past Friday:
Barred Rock
Buff Orpington
Rhode Island Red
White Leghorn
I picked them up at 1.5 weeks old (says the guy) but they already have small primaries and upper covert feathers; they seem big for 12 days but I'm new so what do I know.
I put them in a...
My coop looks as follows:
I live in Oakland, CA (Mediterranean climate, USDA zone 10.)
I don't have any chickens yet (nor chicks) but I have the coop built and I am mulling over wear the food and water go. The coop itself is too small to accommodate 4 chickens and the food/water if it...
What type of coop/run combination you want is going to be dictated by the number of chickens you want to raise.
I am going to be getting my first chicks ever real soon and it all started because my in-Laws bought a HomeCom Deluxe coop for me for Christmas. It looks not unlike this:
The...
I planned on burying some poly hardware cloth as a matter of good practice but the only predators I need to worry about are raccoons but those aren't an issue much since I killed 6 males last year for coming in my house
The home-grown hops from a backyard don't match up to the professional backing of commercial hops, but I grew one plant of Galena and made a batch of beer with it which came out just fine. Galena wasn't the best choice for a single hopped beer, but the product was good otherwise. I will be...
I won't be getting any birds until the county fair in June. This gives me time to focus on organizing the yard, building fence and shed, installing my water post (for water automation and garden drip system), constructing and placing the coop, and getting the brood box organized.
The coop...
I mentioned once in the presence of my in-laws that I thought it would be "neat" to have chickens because fresh eggs are better than the bland, store-bought ones; perhaps I mentioned this twice over a 3 year period.
This most recent holiday season rendered a chicken coop as a gift from them...
