Good news all. Managed to find 3 more chicks a fewdays older than mine from a local farmer. Theyve all mixed in well and clearly cheered up out own chick. Thanks all for your help.
I live in devon in the UK. We are a back garden chicken keeping family. Killing the chick is not an option as it deseves a chance. If it falls ill thats a different matter. We already have more fertile eggs but naturally its going to be 3 weeks before it gets a mate.
Hi all.
I had six eggs in an incubator but only 2 hatched. Last Thursday. Both chicks seemed to be doing well up until yesterday. One of the chicks seemed to have a bit of a wobble when walking and yeasterday Saturday my wife found it dead. The remaining chick seems fine but likes TLC. Apart...
Ok I will go for the shavings (avoiding cedar). But if anyone can enlighten me on the use of freshbed with chicks that would be great because its a huge bale :)
So are you saying that the "freshbed" bedding is ok.its a shreeded straw with pine oil for the antibacterial properties. Or are you recommending pine shavings (dust free)

Im expecting some hatching chicks this week. My supplier has run out of our normal bedding for chooks so ive purchased a variety called "freshbed" which has an anti bacterial pine smelling oil added and is recommended by a leading chicken society. However my question is...is this bedding...
Ok thanks for your replies. I will candle at day 10 and report back. My first attempt at incubating was last year. 2 polish, 4 quails, and a silkie but the latter died shortly after. So hopefully these 6 are going to be ok....back soon

Humidity was 55%. Do you think ive lost my new eggs or should I keep my fingers crossed and hope...
Ok will do. I have used polar chippings before but not with leaves in and this hasnt been a problem. Its the amount of leaves as this load has come straight from a guy who fells trees for a living
I have just been delivered a load of poplar tree woodchip. Though classed as a harfwood it has a lot of poplar leaves in it. Are the leaves ok for my silkies please
Hi all. I'm new to silkie keeping and hatching so have a lot to learn.our four silkies have settled in well and are giving us plenty of eggs. I have a fan type incubator which is running fine and I have 6 eggs in cradles my only concern is the best humidity for silkie eggs. I've read several...
