Free range muscovies, pinned at night, & cannot locate nest

She attempts to set, and gets distracted and off she pops until the next day. She’s tried setting on 23 eggs at one time, staying next to the nest but not actually sitting for more time than it took to lay another egg and move it around to how she liked. She is protective of her nest, peeping...

Free range muscovies, pinned at night, & cannot locate nest

Tried that. Left them in the coop half the day and only two laid. They all dispersed to different areas of the yard and I’m only one set of eyeballs so after I tail a couple in the same direction the others are long gone. xD

Free range muscovies, pinned at night, & cannot locate nest

So this is our first time having ducks in any capacity. We have twelve muscovies, two drakes and ten hens. Earlier in the year we were getting 8 eggs a day for like a solid two months. I had to block off access underneath the porch because the girls suddenly stopped laying in the coop (we let...

    Muscovy Ducks & First Eggs

We have found several little “nest” intentions in their hay (they snubbed their bills at the nesting boxes but we still have them in there) over the past three weeks but no eggos. These are our first egg production animals so that total newbie life is hitting us. xD We’re down in TN so it’s...

    Muscovy Ducks & First Eggs

We have a small flock of 12 birds (2 drakes, 10 hens). For the most part, our drakes have their own ladies and they treat each other, and their gals, very nicely. They’ve been playing hop on top with their gals for two months now, and everyone was born the start of the second to last week of...

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

Oh gosh, boy do I know it’s addictive. xD My husband is already “I thought you only wanted a couple….” Well that was yesterday. xD Here’s our two designated survivors. The yellows flecks are the fermented feed that /somebody/, cough pied lad, decided it would be fun to bathe in.

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

Unfortunately that chocolate cap in the front is one of the extra drakes. x,D I cried big when he hissed. Ultimately what I’d love to do in the future is replace my pied drake with a lavender and, when the personable black capped fellow dies or stops being useful, find myself a nice chocolate...

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

We have a single chocolate hen, three or four solid whites, and the rest are pied. Don’t mind the baby gate, we’re acclimating the jack russels to the ducks. xD

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

Right now they don’t bother one another in the slightest but they’re both only 11 weeks old tomorrow so would they already be starting to show their true hormone induced attitudes? I’ve heard anywhere from 3-10 hens to a drake so I’m really not sure what that golden ratio is. xD

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

These are photos from a week or so ago. The pied is the middle duck in the second picture. His duller “brownish” feathers are starting to look more like a dark dark grey than brown or black now. Unfortunately don’t know the mom, but the female who went broody and hatched everyone out was a...

Muscovy Drake Genetics - Who to Keep?!

So I have a serious problem. I have two favorite drakes in my group of 20 ducks. We have seven confirmed drakes, giving us a total of 13 hens, and our original plan was to keep one male for those 13 gals. But now I have a struggle. See one drake is pied, very lovely splattering of black and...

Drakes & Hens - Help Me Guess

Thanks! I did not know to look for neck thickness. O: I’ll have to go back and double check my “….are you a boy?” questionable ones to see if maybe they have chonky bodies but just dainty feet. xD

Drakes & Hens - Help Me Guess

I’m a total muscovy newbie but I have a pretty good ear so hopefully it won’t fail me! Processing date isn’t until they’re twelve weeks so I still have some time to ID at least.

Drakes & Hens - Help Me Guess

Don’t tell the hubs but….that drake is my favorite. xD He grew faster than all the others and he was picked on mercilessly for what I can only assume is his size—I had to spend the better part of two weeks helping him recover from a vicious feather picking and his wings are still recovering but...

Drakes & Hens - Help Me Guess

Yeah, we definitely knew the one behind her was a drake (he’s been the biggest since…well, birth xD) but we’re also stumped on what coloration he’s gonna end up. Hatched mostly black and now he’s got brown and black coming in for an odd mix. We have some that are as long and big as known...
