I subscribe to a couple of chicken newsletters. One of them said to give chickens something like cold watermelon for treats in the heat, and in NC we've been having some pretty hot weather lately. We gave the ladies a chunk of cold melon and they LOVED it. I have two questions for you.
1. How...
The EE, Faverolles, Ameraucana, Top Hat, and Wyandotte were all laying at around 20 weeks. The Brahma, who matured the most slowly (kind of like the "runt" of the litter) just started laying this week, at almost 27 weeks.
Hi, All.
The good news is that all of our ladies are laying! (This is our first experience with chickens and we have been waiting for this moment for months!) Of course, even with just 6 laying pullets, that's a LOT of eggs. Even our Polish (that is only supposed to lay 2 - 3 eggs per week)...
For the most part, chickens don't seem to be "petlike" pets that seek out human attention. We've gotten our little flock so that they won't flat-out run away from us (most of the time). They did become more docile when they recently started laying although I don't know if that was from being...
I got our first batch of chicks from MyPetChicken. They're a very responsive company and they seem very careful about shipping. Shipping does, however, create stress in the babies so make sure to check often for pasting. We lost one baby from it. Also be sure to dip their beaks in water first...
Our Faverolles injured her toe somehow, and it was bleeding enough to drip. Kind of scary. Fortunately I remembered that we have some Wonder Dust, which is a coagulant used on horses and other livestock. Unfortunately, it's out at the barn with the horse stuff (we board in another location since...
Our pullets just started to lay! We got 2 eggs from our 2 laying pullets (EE and Silver Laced Wyandotte), with the potential for a 3rd egg from our Faverolles who is showing signs of "new layer distress" (panting, not minding to be picked up, seeking our company). It's an exciting time here! We...
I would love for my daughter to ride Western but she has no interest at the moment (I prefer it). I think the more confidence she gets in riding English, which is what she learned with, may open her mind to trying other things. She's still a little intimidated by her horse (and horses in...
Nice! That sounds like a LOT of fun! I don't know of anything like that for Arabians but you betcha I'm going to be looking into it! My daughter's riding instructor has shows at her farm that are kind of like that, although it's in the ring and not on the trail.
Granted, having horses is more like a lifestyle than a hobby, but how many of you enjoy showing your horses, whether it's taking part in dressage, cutting, racing, endurance, some kind of eventing, or just ~showing~ your horse at a specific type of horse show (e.g., Arabian)?
We have an...
Oh good, thanks! That's the plan then: contain her in an area with the nesting boxes. I just hope the other ladies don't decide to lay in the yard, bushes, trees, or flower pots while I'm not home.
