I have a 7x11 walk in coop for 16 birds. Plenty of ventilation and no direct wind or breeze on them. All the birds with tall combs got frostbite at the tips in these single digit negative temps. You have used bag balm and got frost bite, I have used nothing and got frost bite. What is stated...
5 ft fence. We use 175 feet of it for their run and they have never jumped or flew over it. We also have a garden with the same fence as a perimeter to stop deer but it doesn't stop baby rabbits. Will have to line the bottom portion of that fence with hardware cloth.
They are confined to the run which is covered by 14mil clear plastic tarps. The only air coming in is through the top 7" gap that goes around the run for ventilation. I can stand in the coop and run and feel no air blowing in at all. Their coop has four 6x10 windows on opposite wall of their...
This is just out of my imagination but in theory could you take a few egg shells from breakfast and add something in them that they will dislike eating and attach them back together then leave em in the coop? They will attempt to eat it and realize it's terrible and maybe never do it again.
But...
10 degrees here. Gonna be -4 next two nights. Chickens are getting pretty good frostbite on their combs. Coop is wide open into the run so I don't think moisture is causing it.
We had a few that were frozen or almost when I couldn't get out there due to work. Stuck them in the fridge to slow thaw them and ate em up!
Not sure if any of you guys have chickens that do this but we have 6 nesting boxes that our 16 birds use randomly but once winter came they suddenly use...
Almost every chicken we have is dealing with frostbite except the white ones which have a short stubby comb. It has been in single digits lately and they seem to be uncomfortable as they keep standing on one leg trying to warm the other.
It seems like moisture issues can increase the risk of...
I have dealt with repeated sinus infections over the years. The antibiotics the prescribe usually work but it always came back. A home remedy I discovered that may be of help to you is GSE in a neti pot. GSE is grapefruit seed extract, a natural antibiotic, and it works wonders when I get a...
Well that's not great news but maybe we will get lucky. I had some company cut down trees to free up our solar panels and they dumped a huge load of chips beforehand. I did not have chickens at that time so the pile mostly sat and is now decomposing mostly so I can't really use it with the...
Ordered some yesterday. I have high hopes on this kind as it seems to be like egg shells.
I always mix the OS with egg shells and they pick out every piece of egg shell and leave the OS. It's quite funny but impressive too. Haven't tried yogurt as that is not something we have on hand but may...
Anyone have experience with ChipDrop? Just wondering what to expect as we signed up for a load of chips with some logs and stated cannot take "cedar" as this is for the chickens.
We process and sell firewood here so I was also curious about the log drops.
I will share my experience with these. We live where it rains quite a bit and things get very wet. I used these inside the coop initially before making a poop board and then switched them out for Pine Shavings as I assumed the Shavings would provide more warmth in the winter. All the pellets...
I have a question about this. My chickens do not seem to eat crushed/crumbled oyster shells but they consume blended/crushed egg shells like they are starving. I cannot provide enough crushed egg shells to eliminate the layer feed (currently 50/50 layer feed/starter mix). Any other suggestions...
We use Dumor layer crumbles. No issues to date. When it started getting cold we switched to a 50/50 mix of Dumor layer crumbles and Dumor Chick Starter as it has more protein. They still get the layer feed needed with a little more protein for the cold/feathers and we also blend up their egg...
Thanks for the responses. We are using Tidy Cat clumping unscented litter but it has "deodorizer" or some sort that kind of gives off a fragrance even thought it states non-fragrance.
As for food allergy, when we had him to the vet they prescribed their canned stuff from that Science type...
