    Hurt hen

Sorry, the hobbeling seems to have subsided. We have three total in the coop...its fairly big. They are all about a year and a half old. Never had any sort of problem with any of them. We've always counted ourselves lucky.

    Hurt hen

Thanks for replying...she is walking around, flying, even running a little. We let her in the yard today and she went right up to the run where the other girls are and immediately our speckled susex started to pwck at her. She's missing a lot of feathers and she's been noisy since we put her...

    Hurt hen

Looking for advice. We do not have an avian vet anywhere nearby and one of my girls came down yesterday limping. So I left her and kept an eye on her. She didn't roost last night just stayed in the nesting box. This morning I left for work she was still up. Came home about 4 hours later and she...

    Mulch in the coop

I've thought about making just a small run in the grass (temporary, yes). So we'll try that too. I have to pick up meal worms. I know I read, I think on the chicken chick, that they should be used sparingly. They have just gotten so big in the week we've had them. We decided to go with seven...

    Mulch in the coop

LOL, amazing. Sounds like I wouldn't even need to go to the gym that day. We only have three and we did let them out last night. My eleven year old daughter was the hero and got them all back in. They really haven't had many treats yet only a couple of strawberries that I chopped very very...

    Mulch in the coop

thanks for the reply..I wound up putting mulch at the bottom and I had a TON of extra dirt from gardens out front so i put that over the mulch. Seems to be working ok for now. I was trying to start a new thread today and I have no idea why I couldn't figure it out since obviously I've done it...

    Mulch in the coop

thank you so much! Ok, so I'm going to cover the dirt I put in there with sand. I recently read that it should be washed construction sand. And with Clayton block right down the street I'm going to start with that. I didn't know they don't eat or drink at night so I'll just keep that all out in...

    Mulch in the coop

thanks. It was such a small amount and I had to cover the ground in the run part which is probably 4x6 and I needed to cover about 6 inches or so. So I layered it, mulch first then the dirt on top. We're in NJ and it has been a bit rainy (sorry I should have put our location in there). Any other...

    Mulch in the coop

The coop will be finished this weekend and we are picking up our little gals on saturday. I've been doing some gardening in the front yard and have some old red cedar mulch, not much, just a small flower bed. The bottom of the coop, the run, has nothing on it right now so my plan was to take...

    New to BYC

Thank you all for your input..helpful indeed!! Still working on the coop and it's coming out GREAT. We don't have a lot of space here so I'm thinking we'll start with three and see how we do. I have a few friends who own in town and some have heat lamps(for their full grown hens) and some don't...

    New to BYC

The building of our coop will start tomorrow..We are repurposing our wooden playset that my kids have outgrown. I have been researching as much as I can in the past few weeks getting ready to pick them out. We're going to try to start with three, even though most local stores only sell a minimum...
