Pretty blue eggs

Final tally for my hatch. 36 out of 55 hatched. Out of the others that I left in until today 8/10 developed into chicks but for some reason never pipped and died in the shell. 36/55= 65% not the best

35/55 out 1 more pipped but haven't seen any activity lately.

I I set 55. I think I took out 7 or so that were infertile/quit developing. I've tried counting and I think there are 17 out and at least 7 pipping now

ok. I need opinions. Leave them in incubator or move to brooder? I don't want to hurt the eggs who are still pipping

I had 5 speckled Sussex hatched this AM before I left for work. Expecting more when I get home. Do any of you take them out of incubator and put them in brooder before the others hatch? I don't want to hurt the eggs that aren't finished by opening too soon but I feel like the chicks that are out...

This morning I was going to turn my eggs one last time and put them on lockdown. I decided to put some paper towels under them to keep the bottom of the incubator under the hardware cloth from getting dirty (it is a homemade styrofoam incubator). I used sand las I used sand last year and pine shavings this year. I think I prefer shavings. The sand seemed to get really stinky even though I scooped it out. The shavings get stinky and I just pour them out and put fresh in. A bag of shavings lasts much longer than a bag of sand IMO

What did it end up being?

I use plastic totes, cardboard boxes, and half a 55 gallon drum. The plastic totes and drum are easily cleaned by spraying with a water hose. If the box gets too dirty, just throw it away.
