Let me start by saying that I got them as chicks in October, in Alaska.
I reared them inside of course, but by December I had them in a coop with at 250 watt flood and open access to the run.
They are all healthy and happy! We get ambient temps of -30°f and I have yet to have a problem with...
So, based on what I have been reading, I dug up a chunk of yard (sod) and plopped it in the brood box.
They went freaking bananas! Picking, scratching, standing on it, laying on it. Was great to watch.
I use Red Tiger Worms to compost and make fertilizer, I've been tossing some of those in from time to time while I grow the mealworm army. They seem to enjoy them!
They also got fresh baby Kale and Spinach, which they went crazy over

My RIR chicks were hatched on the 4th, and I have to play ninja to keep them in the brood box when I am changing food and water.
It's much cooler up here (50f day temps), but, figured it wouldn't hurt them in short bits. Their wing feathers are in, tails...
Another converted dog kennel. It works SO perfectly!
Deep bedding pine chips and hung the heat lamp inside.
The only complaint that I have is that these critters are going NUTS scratching the pine chips, and it fills up their water trough.
