    Shaking Chicken and feather loss

I have the same problem with a 1-1/2 yr old Barred Rock. She was beautiful now she is almost naked. Is it common for the flock to suddenly turn on one they were raised with? Or could it be something else as in lice or mites?

Buff Orpingtons - How well do they lay?

I have 4 BOs, 2 RIR, and 2 Barred Rock. I am pretty sure the BOs lay a creamy light brown to white(ish) egg. I usually get 3 or 4 a day along with a couple of darker brown which I am almost positive is from my barred rocks. Anyway out of the 8 hens I get 6 to 7 eggs most days then I will get a...

    Color Changing Egg???

I have brown egg layers. Light brown, tan, speckled, freckled, but all brown since they started laying last July. Then yesterday I got a white one. There were some brown streaks and freckles, but it was a whitish egg. There was a little poop on it, so my wife went to wash it and it turned brown...

    Silver Sebright Bantam hen

I bought a SSB at the Conroe, Tx sale in early May. She was supposed to be (or just getting to) laying age. I had her for a couple of weeks, then she laid 3 eggs on consecutive days, then took a 2 week break. Now she has laid 3 eggs again in 3 days. Waiting to see if she takes another break...

How many people have buff Orpingtons

I have 5. 4 hens and a roo. He is about a month older than the hens which are 4 months (16-17 weeks). If I am correct in my understanding, they will start laying around 20 weeks. Hope so, I am ready to start collecting eggs. I also have 2 Barred rocks and 2 Rhode Island Red hens. I still like...

    Dandelions

The most fun I have had with my hens was the day I brought them a box of nightcrawlers. I have never laughed so hard. Much better than a rugby match. They also love to fight over tomatoes, apples and watermelon. My roo would go from rind to rind drinking the watermelon juice that pooled up in...

    Attacking the new hen

I bought a single Sebright hen today. She is about 4 months old. I already had 8 2 mos old pullets. 4 buff orps, 2 barred rocks, and 2 rirs. Tho younger the pullets outweigh and are bigger than her. I sat her down in the run and they immediately attacked. I picked her up and made other...

My adaptation of the "Purina" Design

Mountainlover - Sorry I didn't reply sooner. No, I didn't use the filler strips on the roof. The water system works great. Makes life a lot easier. On the waterer, I used 1" pipe & fittings. In the bucket I drilled the a 1-3/8" hole. In the hole, I fit a pvc adapter that is 1" pipe thread on...
