How much do you pay for layer pellets and from what state.

We paid $16 for 50 lb. bags, at a wholesale, bulk rate, for Alaska-made pellets. This was bought in Anchorage. Cost doesn't include the 600 mile round trip for us to get to the feed store!!

    Will beets affect yolk color?

I don't know about beets, but our chickens eat some wild berries here in the summer that turn their yolks a deep deep deep orange, almost red, color! Very striking! I wouldn't be surprised if beets do the same...will be interested to hear!

SNOW - refusing to come out for food and water?

These are very funny postings to read through! Here in Alaska, our chickens' yard has snow in it at least six months out of the year, so they MUST get out and walk around in it. The first few days of snow every fall, they mumble and grumble and complain mightily and won't come out, but then they...

We've wrapped wire around the waterer cord and the extension, so that it's impossible for the cord to pop out unless a human...

How do you prevent water from freezing

We use a round pail heater....it wraps around the waterer and supplies a constant source of heat. We are EXTREMELY happy with this arrangement. We've tried everything else in the past, including the kicking the ice out in the morning and adding new hot water routine, which got pretty old...

Greetings from a much warmer Alaska!

So nice to see other Alaskans on here! I hope everyone, and their birds, are enjoying these wonderfully warmer temps! We sure needed a break from it... Yes Grandma is one tough old bird! She doesn't seem to know how to die, and no sign of frostbite anywhere on her. And she often seems more...

Greetings from a much warmer Alaska!

Hello to all! I am new to the forum, but have been a reader of the site for a while, particularly admiring the beautiful coops that so many of you construct! I live in the interior of Alaska (where my temp this morn is only -10, after nearly two weeks of -45!), and I am especially interested in...
