No worries, I've been leaving you to it
All in all, no change, no worsening/improving of the black bits on her comb, equally no sign of any deterioration in her mood or attitude. We gave them all a good check over yesterday and the others seem fine, we're just inspecting her daily for now and...
Quick update: we have 4 very dusty and irritated hens, wondering why their nap was disturbed - I'm happy the bug angle is covered, at least for now.
We got a few of the black bits off last night after the first vaselining and the remaining ones looked a bit more scab-like close up this time...
Per the other discussion, I know 'tick-flea' must be a colloquialism, ticks and fleas are not the same thing (our cat gets ticks from hanging around with sheep), even if that isn't what's happened here we'll treat them for mites etc to be on the safe side.
In the interests of science, if...
Thanks Kathy, as you say, if it is wrong then the worst we have is properly mite-treated hens, a clean house and a slightly oily and annoyed hen with a shiny comb :)
I've never tried weighing a chicken, but after a beer or 2 it might be doable.
A quick google and the pics for fowl pox do...
From what we can see they don't fight at all, and (as best we could tell) she was the boss from the start, and much more likely to be the agressor. The black that was left after we gave it a good clean was more like the comb itself than any kind of scab.
Oh that's clever, I'd not heard of Sex Links before - but a quick good and she does look similar, maybe apart from the 'collar'? - Good idea to have colour be a guide to gender, given the number of rogue males we ended up with :(
This is Tikka, currently suffering with some mites but we're working hard to sort her out. Definitely a girl, we're pretty sure she's a mongrel, would anyone like to suggest possible parents? She lays quite pale eggs with no spots or markings. When she was little she had what looked like...
Quick update: we've just done the second cleaning/reapplication of the Vaseline. The first removal brought off a lot of the black gunk, but there's still plenty on there. It's late here (and bank holiday) but will get the stuff we need to do it properly tomorrow (and keep the Vaseline-ing going...
We don't. The black bits behave like scabby skin when we tried to brush them off earlier, we didn't use too much pressure thinking they might be some kind of scan and it could hurt her.
Have applied Vaseline as Snow Bunny suggested and will see what happens when we wipe off in an hour or so.
Hi - we're based in south east england and have had hens for about 6 months - after a few ups and downs (mainly due to incorrect sexing) we have just had our first eggs and are really enjoying the entertainment of our new lawn ornaments and pets.
Here are Tikka, Bhajii, Korma and Pilau...
Hi All
Long time lurker, first time poster. Let me introduce Tikka, we're not sure what type she is (if any!), she's about 6-8 months and lives with 3 friends in a decent sized back garden. She eats mainly corn/pellets and occasional veg/treats.
She started laying 1 egg every 2 days in...
