But, for anyone curious about the bantam x standard... I recently hatched an olive egger who is very obviously half silkie. The result: She looks like a slightly smaller Ameraucana with fibro/black skin, 5 toes, and the cutest little olive egg.
Well I ended up selling the little bastard because he decided that I was his enemy and there was no convincing him otherwise. He would chase me around the yard! Sigh. He went to a happy farm family with farm kids who aren't afraid of him... he will have no choice but to yield to their smothering...
Hi everyone,
I was scrolling through this forum trying to read up on what people thought of the taste/size/etc of the Cornish Cross chicken breed and decided to post my own results.
We butchered ours at 5.5 weeks, and wow, what a range in sizes we got! Our runt was 2.5lb and Big Bertha was 4.3...
Hi all!
I have 4 8 week old Silkies. This post contains 3 of them, as I was sick of getting covered in chick poo to get these photos, haha. The fourth has a single comb, perhaps is a Frizzle cross, so jury is still out on that one. What do you think of these 3 8-week-olds? Pullets or Cockerel...
Right, I know OEs are not a breed. But since this particular OE seems to be a cross (I’m guessing cuckoo Marans) with the barring gene, I wonder if the F1s would retain that sex linking trait.
Here is a photo when this chick was 1 week old. This chick is barred, so I wonder if s/he carries the sexing gene with him/her. There is a white dot on top of their head, which means boy? Do Olive Eggers carry the trait?
Hi there. Here is my now 8 week old Olive Egger mix. S/he is SO friendly. I used to think s/he was a boy, but then her/his comb stopped progressing ahead of the other chicks.
And now, her/his tail feathers look a bit pointy to me, and I’m not sure I can rule out that this chick is a boy. What...
Still a mystery to me. Update: Blue is now 8 weeks old, and his/her comb has not grown to an obvious cockerel size. I was assuming she was a pullet. But now, his/her tail is looking suspicious. Do these feathers look pointy to you? What do you think: boy or girl?
I am deciding which breed rooster to add to my flock and saw a beautiful photo online of a BPR roo that had some blue tail feathers. Is that common or did someone cross BPR with another breed to achieve that?
thanks!
I do have a toddler, but the rooster stays apart from my large fowl flock with his little hen, so I am not that concerned at the present time. Come Spring, that may change, though. I was hoping to hatch some chicks from him and the hen I lost to a hawk, but I'm honestly not sure I care for this...
I was thinking about doing this, as we just finished the electrical wiring to our coop. The days are short here, maybe 8-9 hours in Michigan. What kind of light do you have?
Thanks!
