My girls coops is finally pretty much done. They love it so far. This was built entirely by myself (a lady) for about $60 (and that is Hawaii priced lumber) A couple things: it doesn't get cold here so I didn't have to worry about that, and we don't have any predators besides the occasional cat...
So in Hawaii we have quite the feral chicken problem, however we are in a neighborhood that hasn't had that issue before. I am keeping chickens on the sly, but I have a feral rooster hanging around my yard all of a sudden. I don't have any idea where he came from (I may not be the only sneaky...
I have to keep feed inside or else I end up feeding the doves and finches, they are so greedy! When my chicks hit about 2 months I ran out of chick starter and the feed store recommended triple duty until they get to egg laying age.
My birds are SO weird! They are so scared of everything and don't ever want to try anything new. It's just the two of them so if one runs away screaming, the other follows right behind. They won't even eat bread crumbs! I am hoping they grow out of this, I hate to toss stuff I know they would...
My blog is a mish mash of travel, military, and sustainable living... My new chickens have made an appearance! I have dreams of a homestead but living in downtown Honolulu I am making due with my two chicks and some pineapple plants!

These are my 6-7 week old chicks one Buff Orp and one Ameracana. I am hoping these are girls because we would have to get rid of a rooster. Those combs are starting to scare me.
A ceramic heat lamp is fine, we were using one before stepping the wattage down to a red light bulb. The red bulbs don't put out much, if any, light. So if that is your concern it shouldn't bother you.
While I am VERY new to chickens, I did notice that at days old our Ameraucana chick was bossing our B.O. around and pushing her out of the way for food.
Great coop! I have to say, I had to check it out after seeing your user name! I lived in Athol for 4 years in the 90's... Although we were out closer to Farragut State Park.
I have a couple of two week old chicks and I would like to change up the feeding situation.
We are in Hawaii and we are lucky enough to have beautiful weather year round. For the past week I have been letting them out to free range in our yard for 6-8 hours a day. They ignore their feed when...
We finally got our two baby girls (hopefully!) yesterday!
So far they are doing incredible. The kids love them to death and the dog wants to eat them, just as I thought. I can't leave them alone, I love them so much!
They are in an aquarium right now and we can't wait until we can move them...
I would love to do it, my husband is a mushroom lover (me not so much, only on pizza!) we are in Hawaii and its a pain to get the mycellium imported. You have to get a permit and it has to go through quarantine! Crazy!
I think I can squeeze two smallish raised beds in my back yard, and I am thinking about turning my front flower bed into a veggie garden. We have awesome weather and free water, so as long as I don't kill everything with my black thumb I will be good.
My husband is pretty good about "indulging...
