Well that less likely to go broody is probably not too accurate but my experience is limited and I also wanted babies so I let them build up a clutch of eggs. As can be seen in this picture 3 of my 6 girls decided to go broody at the same time. Now just shy of two months later I have another...
I was mocked at first as my pullets weren't laying anything for at least a couple of months when I got them last year, I would classify this as their first laying cycle and I am happy with their production. I too am curious as to what is considered the upper limits of age for the egg laying, if...
I just finished a 10 day cycle of Tetracycline on my flocks, during a recent heatwave the birds appetites dropped off and some were becoming sick. After the treatment they seem to be doing much better, probably going to do a treatment of Noromectin/Ivermectin next to hopefully help anyone that...
Slowly nearing my first full year of having a small flock of Chanteclers, beautiful birds that seem to consistently lay between 4 and 5 eggs a day out of the 6 girls that are egg laying age. I found a rooster and I am happy to report that this year they doubled their flock size to 14 birds...

I think you're going to find most people agree with your sentiments in regards to financial investment and chicken keeping. I am actually afraid to tally what I blew already, my first egg might be a $1000 egg.... How ever that money is well worth it just to see chickens at my house :-)
Here are the Chanteclers I picked up from Cirrus Hill Farm in Ontario. So far so good, I probably should have gotten 5 more and a roosters while there but live and learn!

I have wanted to get chickens...
