    mean chicken

Fairly recently one of my 12 girls has decided to sit most of the day in a nest, and when anyone tries to lift her to see if she is sitting on eggs, they get resoundly PECKED! I have left her on 2 ceramic eggs to see if she is going broody, but find her in another nest next time I visit. I...

To Broody or not to Broody...

Here it is, the end of August, and I have one chicken that likes to sit on all the eggs and I'm wondering if this may be a good time to allow her to do her thing. I gave her two ceramic eggs to tend to until I get more information. Question #1 is this too late in the season to let her start her...

    Dark Chocolate Eggs

I just researched for some different chickens and their virtues and found Marans, a chicken that gives dark chocolate colored eggs, and I think I'll get one of those in the early spring to join my herd early summer. Have you found any more breeds?

    breakfast is served!

Uh oh, I think I may have a problem brewing in the coop! Today was the second time in as many days I have found suspicious activity in the nesting box and I'm getting worried that one of my hens may be enjoying an early morning breakfast. Yesterday was an egg, broken in half with most of the...

Can I drape bird netting over the top of my electronet to keep out hawks and owls?

We topped our run with bird netting and it was fine...until it snowed. The snow dragged the netting down so low that it bent the supports and bent the fence inward a ways. I had to go out and cut it all off, so now there is no ceiling over the run and the chickens are in peril. It has now...

    How can this be??

I HAD 12 chickens and one died (that's another story) and today, with 11 chickens left, I gathered 12 eggs from the nests. How can that be? Can some chickens lay 2 eggs a day? Sure, I COULD have miscounted, but, hey, I thought I did pretty well between one and twelve!

    Baby, it's cold out there!

Thank you. That makes me feel better about the girls' living conditions! I have a rainbow assortment of birds, and their acomodations are great (I think). Solid construction and no air leaks to produce drafts. Fresh food and water. A big (10 X 60) covered run. I let them out every morning...

    Baby, it's cold out there!

I'm new and we are expecting COLD temperatures out there this coming week. My girls have been handling 30's to 40's OK so far, but I'm wondering what else I can do for them to handle temps going down into the teens. I have a heat lamp, but it doesn't seem to do much. Their coop is solid, but...
