Needle for injecting is 22 gauge. It did get clogged tonight when he was injecting her but we were able to unclog. Next time we will pull in a little bit more so that if we need to squirt some out to get unclogged we don't fall short of a full dosage.
Yay!! My boyfriend gave her the injection just now and he did a GREAT job. Now we are 50% done - two days down and two to go!
Thanks to everyone who read and/or replied to my post. :0
Thanks for the responses. I posted in the other forum as suggested.
I did try to give the penicillin injection in her muscle, but I failed. I checked before pushing the plunger so I know I did not hit a vein. In fact, I know it went in just under the skin because I could see it there. I'm...
I am reposting the below item from the "injuries" forum. Original post at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=590183
Need help with injecting penicillin - I live in Orangevale, CA
So I did my first penicillin injection yesterday. It sucked. That stuff is super thick...
So I did my first penicillin injection yesterday. It sucked. That stuff is super thick and clogs the needle. Then my stupid needles are too long, one inch needles and I only need to go in 1/4 inch. My little chicken Nugget is small and somewhat thin, so I put a sticker on the needle so I...
Thank you to everyone who read and/or responded. I have another post on buying the injectable antibiotics. The post is located at:

Oh yeah, I am defininitely on top of the surgical portion of bumblefoot treatment. I have another post about that part of it.
Check it out at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=586894
For me, cutting out the bumble and removing the yucky stuff was the easy part. But...
Thanks, everyone. I have been unable to find any SHORT needles that are large enough for Penicillin (20 or 22 gauge.) The ones I bought are one inch long, and the only shorter ones I found online are 3/4 inch long. So I guess I will be doing a LOT of practicing on an orange before I attempt...
Great post on your blog. I noticed you used some type of small container for soaking her foot, can you add some details about that? I have been making my hen stand in a sink full of warm water and epsom salts and we both get tired of that quickly. Whatever towel I use to wrap her up with...
Finally made my decision about antibiotics for a case of recurring bumblefoot in my Rhode Island Red, Nugget. After extensive research, including discussion with a pharmacist friend, I decided to go with injectable penicillin for 6 days. Since I have never given an injection I did even more...
Here's some photos I took this morning, 10/20/11. She has scabs on both feet but I am currently only treating the swollen one. Treatment involves soaking with epsom salts, picking at scab to remove staph, then applying neosporin, gauze and vetrap. I will buy penicillin this weekend.
I am...
I will take a picture tonight and post it tomorrow. She is not acting sick but she was limping prior to the surgery.
I did go back and read the articles on giving injections, and using penicillin on chickens so I am more comfortable with the idea now. But I still have not bought the stuff...
Our chickens eat these all the time, I find them in their poop. Does not seem to bother them at all. I paid extra for the biodegradable airsoft pellets and the kid stopped shooting the guns several years ago, way before we had chickens. Ummm...I'm guessing I got ripped off on the...
I am new to chicken ownership and discovered that one of my Rhode Island Reds has bumblefoot. After reading a ton of information about it on this forum, I was able to do some chicken foot surgery on her last week. That went well, but I am now confused about whether to use antibiotics. Some...
