    Silkie rooster question

I would to have an entire flock of silkies but then I'd miss my mutts. And my SLWs and my Ameracaunas. Lol... :)

    Silkie rooster question

These are the sweetest chickens! Never owned this breed before. Do the roos get spurs? Will they always be this nice? Mine are crowing now.....but purr and chirp when I come around. One even lets me hold and pet him!

    Beating the heat?

I am probably going to install a box fan at one end of the coop this weekend. Circulate the air for them. They have a run that is completely shaded but it's still hot. Will freeze some veggies for them too. Florida summers can be brutal!

What are some of the ways you guys are keeping your flock cool this summer? Mine does not free range and the temps have really ramped up. I want to keep them comfortable!! Thanks...

    Most important aspect of butchering?

Thanks!! Loving the replies, all great stuff to know. Is it true what they say about butchering away from the rest of the chickens? So they won't be traumatized or is that just being overly dramatic? Do chickens know or even care? You would think it would cause a commotion.

Great info! At what age would be best to butcher? They seem awful scrawny to me despite their age. And they eat well. Just figured they should be pretty fat first.

We have never butchered chickens before. We have a dozen RIRs we are raising though for meat. What is the most critical piece of advice you would give us? They are 9 weeks old. Thanks!

mother hen turning on her offspring!!!

She hatched them........most are black, two are same color as she is. (multi colored) She has singled out a black one and constantly chases it. Weirdest thing. There's nothing wrong with the chick.....so I have no idea why she would turn on it.

mother hen turning on her offspring!!!

All of a sudden my bantam hen has decided she doesn't like one of her "kids". They are about three weeks old. She chases it all over the pen trying to peck it. Won't let it eat or drink or come near her or the other chicks. So I separated it from the flock. But what would cause this? They are...

Help, sounds like a squeaking wheel

Thanks...yeah I think I should separate her from the rest.
