Golden Sex Link--did they mess this up?

Oh good grief! I'll call the feed store and let them know. Sigh. The curse strikes again.

Golden Sex Link--did they mess this up?

I like to joke that I'm cursed with boy-picking hands. I inevitably get a rooster in most batches of chicks I pick out from sex-sorted bins. I thought I'd get a sex link this time as wouldn't it be fun to KNOW it's a hen? I think the feed store might have messed up their labeling or something...

    Respiratory Distress

Thanks, chickenvet97. I'll bring that up when I take her in tomorrow. The one that's sick now is my huge brahma hen, that I raised from a chick with a lot of handling. She is so friendly and cuddly, and she follows me around the yard at free-range time. She's top of the pecking order and...

    Respiratory Distress

One of my hens had been crowing for a couple days. Everything I looked up said that it was a behavioral/hormonal issue. Then, last night, I found her on the floor of the run, struggling to breathe. We rushed her to the emergency vet, but they couldn't determine what was wrong from an external...

Introducing Pullets to Rest of Flock

We did something like what azygous did. We have a portable run that we placed in the chicken area, and then we just propped one corner up enough for the little ones to get under if they needed to. It worked out really well.

    naming chickens

I like naming them with a theme in mind. We named ours after Dragon Age characters. Barred Rock - Wynn Easter Egger - Merrill Australorp - Morrigan Brahma - Andraste, bride of the maker!

    Sacramento BYC's-Please Read!

I have some chickens from that store. I have five right now, but none of them Jersey Giants or Brown Leghorns. I had one that I thought was too small for a while, but it turned out its companion was a roo, and she eventually caught up in size to him anyway. My friends had chickens from that...

    City Chickens?

Hey! I know this post is a couple months old, but I live in West Sacramento, in the middle of the suburbs (Southport area) and keep chickens. So far, so good!

Easter Egger - Pullet or Roo?

kcaywood, your chicken looks so much like mine, except older! I think the coloring is so pretty, so neither my husband nor I want to eat him/her. I noticed when I looked at Leiliana today that he/she is growing dark iridescent green tail feathers. Errr...is this a roo-thing?

Easter Egger - Pullet or Roo?

Y'know, I want to keep the hope alive and everything, but the more I look at the chick, the more I think she is not a she at all. Behaviorally, this chick is more aggressive than the other one, its comb is definitely turning red at almost-but-not-quite six weeks of age, and its legs are massive...

    Sorry, fixed it!

Easter Egger - Pullet or Roo?

We picked up a couple of chicks at the end of July, both supposedly pullets, but since sexing is only 90% accurate... I have the sinking feeling 'she' is actually a roo. About six weeks old, named Leiliana. Leiliana has grown very very fast, to the point where we had been thinking there was...

What's the name of your chicken coop? "Chicken" Hilton here

After mulling over Cluckingham Palace, Bird Barn, Eggcellent Edifice, and Poultry Penthouse, we finally decided to go with Ovulation Station.

    Odor from chickens

We got our chickens from a friend. She fed them organic feed, and noticed that their poop was a lot less smelly on organic. It only cost a few more $ per bag, so I continued to do that. Ours live mostly in a run right next to the house, and they get to free range in our small suburban...

Large size differential between two chicks of the same age.

I don't think she's a bantam...she's not supposed to be, anyways. They had a ton of varieties, including bantams of all sorts, so it might be possible. But yeah, I know the australorps are supposed to be big. She's very very loud and is eating and drinking, so...I'm not sure what's going on here.
