    Murderous Light Sussex hen

So when, if ever, can I let them all free range together? Or should I lock up the light sussex when I let the silkie out? I'm still traumatised by the horrific scene I witnessed, don't know if I'll ever forgive her.

    Murderous Light Sussex hen

I've just had a disastrous experience with my first incubation. I only hatched 4 out of 20 however one was a gorgeous blue female japanese bantam. I was completely in love. I gave them to my broody silkie hen to raise and she bonded instantly. They are only 5 days old and are all tiny bantams. I...

    Post pictures of your bantams!

Here's my little cutie, Ebony. I hatched her in September 2011 in my bed. Yup. My bed.https://www.backyardchickens.com/image/id/10393486/width/400/flags/LL And here's what she's sitting on...her adopted babies, little frizzles. https://www.backyardchickens.com/image/id/10393490/width/400/flags/LL

Dumb question...google didn't give me an answer :)

Hi Postalpoultry. Thanks for your quick answer. You're right about randy drakes. I had a Pekin drake once which I bought as a companion (not knowing it was a boy) for my brown hen. He was rehomed when he wouldn't stop molesting her. It was like one day they were best buddies and the next BAM...

Dumb question...google didn't give me an answer :)

Hi guys I'm wondering...if a female duck has a drake then are the eggs she lays fertile all year round or only in breeding season? I mean, I know when hens, if there's a rooster there's an assumption the eggs are all fertile so is it the same for ducks?

Is it true what they say?

Good. I'm glad it's not accurate. The little Japanese bantam I'm hoping will be a girl reckons it's a boy by this method. And you're right, it feels awful holding the chick this way. I won't do it again. Brahmabreeder you sound like me. It's a boy explosion when I hatch chicks!!

    Eeeeek!!! There's hope, there's hope, there's hope!!

So I've had an incubation disaster. Out of 20 eggs (3 large breed, 17 bantams) only 4 have hatched. They were given to their adoptive mama along with 4 remaining 'slow' eggs from my deathtrap incubator. Mama and chicks hopped off the remaining eggs while I was out today and the 4 remaining eggs...

Have you ever moved eggs from the incubator to under a broody and had a successful hatch?

I did this last week. I put 2 eggs from my incubator at day 16 under my broody silkie and 1 hatched uneventfully the other didn't even pip. I'll be watching to see what happens with yours.

Is it true what they say?

That if you dangle a little chick by the 'scruff' of its neck and they either let their legs dangle down straight or pull them up will tell you if it's a girl or a boy?

    Japanese Bantam Thread!

Hi everyone. The top left chick is a little Japanese bantam. It is a light silvery colour. What colour is it likely to be as an adult?
