Possibly as long as 9 months - so about half her life. It does vary and several times I've thought the problem was resolving. But the obvious stress factors aren't active right now yet she looks more bare and winter is coming on.
She is very dark colored, so you don't really notice the problem until she stretches out her wings and I never seem to have the camera handy when that happens. It just looks kind of skeletal - about half the wing has bare quills.
Looking back I see the way I wrote, it looks like I am saying I give chicken-flavored cat food as their primary food. I meant I give chicken (Poultry) food and cat food. In fact, give two kinds of poultry food daily - one is indeed the all-flock from TSC, and the other is an all-waterfowl...
I have 3 ducks: one Pekin (male), one Kahki (female) and one female offspring of the other 2. The "daughter" has had - with varying intensity - bare quills on her wings for months. In the spring I thought it was overmating/aggression/stress from the male, then I thought maybe a misfire on...
Thanks for the help. I was feeling like I had let it go too long already but you are right, it has only been a week since the dynamic changed and now that you mention it, 'Dad' has been reasserting his power over daughter - pecking her away from being first at food, bath - now that the males...
I watched my female Khaki pulled out the feathers on her back, between/under her wings, about 4-6 weeks ago. The feathers did not grow back. At the time, her 4 offspring (3 males, 1 female) were coming to maturity so there were 4 males/2 hens. I talked to an aquaintance who has chickens and...
Thanks; have wiped approx 3x in 7 hrs. so will leave it alone now and see what tomorrow brings. Did see a little black stuff come out the first time i wiped - ? Probably can't get a good picture now; once the duckling dried off the down really fluffed up around it.
Thank you! I agree, timing is weird. Mama duck is still sitting on 9 other eggs with no holes or signs of action (I peeked a few hours ago while she was stretching her wings). Little guy looks a lot better than he did after his rough entry/fall.
Temp is 90 degrees (heat lamp). No poop yet. Anus seemed prominent at first so husband asked at feed store and someone said maybe constipation and we should wipe it every so often - ?
