Wow, thanks for answering so quickly! Eggs, really??? I give them two way scratch, some layer pellets and a tad of oyster shell. Whatdaya think? They are free range so I would think they get a lot of bugs and insects during the day.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again......................
Yup, no need on the grit but you still may want to give them oyster shell for calcium. I have free range chickens and when I stop putting the shell (just a little bit) in with their food, the egg shells get thin.
Hello- Several months ago I posted a question regarding one of my poor RIR chickens who had a large red area on her back where she had lost her feathers. I suspected at the time it was the rooster who was not being as gentle as he could be with her. It was advised that I get a chicken saddle...
Aloha from Hawaii,
I used a Chicken saddle on my RIR for the first time after reading about them. You see, my poor girl's back was all clawed up by Mr Rooster and after many months I watched hopelessly by, while it just got worse. Until- drum beat here..........I came on this forum to ask what...
Aloha from Hawaii,
My RIR chicken has had this same kind of wound on her back from Mr. Roo too, so glad to see this topic discussed in such detail. I'm going to get some Blue Coat but my oh my........what is a chicken saddle? Can I just make something that will stay on and keep Mr. Roo from...
Until what age to all of you give your chickens yogurt? I wonder if they are free range, do they really need it for digestion? My chickens get plenty of grass so I'm wondering if that + scratch+oyster shell + crumble is enough to keep my lil gals happy and healthy?
I agree with all the composting suggestions before me and I want to add one more thought, if you want to keep your chicks from wasting so much of their food, try feeding them in some kind of raised tray, at least until they are older. I put thier food in a plastic planter bottom dish and have...
Have you thought about having a poop collection system? I have a home made contraption in my coop for now that consists of slanted plastic roofing material that I hose off into a gutter that I hung from the outside that is slanted directly into the compost pile. This way I don't loose any of...
Hi ya Rik. Yeah, I agree with onthespot and wish I had had such good advice when I started with my chickens. I think I may have too many pullets (all RIR) and they have formed their own football team- nearly stampeding me for breakfast this morning! Good luck and Welcome to BYC! :cd:cd:cd:cd
I'm a peace loving lady myself but as I live in the jungle where I often need to slash my way through I too walk around with a machete. My opinion only but seems to me you should be able to walk around your own property with whatever you want. I think it was great that you kept handing your dogs...
