How to Break a Broody Hen

Yes! I posted a more detailed update below, but I noticed that her "tone" changed a day and half in - it was that night that she chose to back to her roost. Thank you!

How to Break a Broody Hen

Yeah - so I never locked her out of the coop, as the other ladies need the nesting boxes, just as you say. She is such a sweet girl - never got nasty at all. But she would sit on nest all day and night, always going back to it. I took the advice of the good people here and found a cage with a...

How to Break a Broody Hen

This is so helpful. Thank you very much. She has been in a cage with wire mesh underneath for 2 days now. I will give her a couple more and see how she goes. It is very warm here.

How to Break a Broody Hen

Thanks - that is good advice. I will leave her with the flock. So here is something to add to the broody chicken conversation (I hope I don't get racked over the coals for this...) We have tenants living in the suite who were farmers in Syria. As I am very new to Chicken keeping, F (our tenant)...

Is this possible, or just high hopes?

I have been quite surprised at how noisy my girls can be. We are in an urban area, but they are allowed. I thought some neighbours might complain, but so far nothing. But they do get loud sometimes.

How to Break a Broody Hen

I have had a broody for over a month now. I was happy enough to let her wait it out (as I have been in and out of town and dear hubby has been kind enough to take care of the girls for me). But it has been so long now. I am going to pick up a crate and try this. I tried consistently moving her...

    Hardware cloth

Yeah weird right? I asked for 1/2", and they said they didn't have that, but they did have 3/8". It could be the 19ga with 1/2" mesh holes - I have never actually measured it. When I am out again I will and see if I can get a confirmation for you!

    Hardware cloth

I was lucky enough to contact a farm equipment supplier and get a good deal. If you can call around and see, that may be your best bet. I paid $110 for 100 feet of 4' wide 3/8" gauge hardware cloth. And that was Canadian ;).

    How did you choose names?

I got my hens as pullets, so we knew they were all ladies. We have a theme going:They are all named after apples. The black lady in my profile pic is Fuji. There is also Macintosh, Gala and Granny Smith. I figure this is a trend we can keep going for quite some time, as I can only have 4 hens at...

Egg Laying stopped after Monostat treatment

Thanks so much! I was worried that the treatment had harmed her in some way.

Egg Laying stopped after Monostat treatment

Good morning! I am very new to chicken keeping - this is my first season. One of my hens got a sour crop almost as soon as I received her. I don't know why. I tried all the non-medicated remedies, but her crop kept growing, and she was dripping fluid from her mouth, and having a hard time...

    why do you keep chickens?

I got them for eggs but am discovering what great pets they are as well! Mostly I just wanted a new experience and it seemed like fun. It IS so much fun!

Newbie here looking for design ideas please

I am pretty new to the world of Chicken Keeping as well, but have been quite pleased with how safe my run is. With just 4 hens, like what you are getting, I created an enclosed run 12x8' (6 feet high). The coop is inside it. Every side is covered with 3/8" hardware cloth that is buried about 10"...

MONISTAT IS TOXIC TO BIRDS!! DO NOT USE TO TREAT SOUR CROP!!!

I treated my chicken with monistat as a last result about 2 weeks ago. I had tried everything and she just wasn't getting better. Thought it was worth a try. She made a beautiful recovery. I thought it might turn into pendulous crop because her crop had been so stretched out for so long, but she...

    Crease in my hen's chest?

Yeah, maybe. But I can't quite tell. She won't let me near her to feel it (we are working on getting their trust so holding is easier...I am such a new chicken keeper!) It looks deeper to me. If it is just the feathers would they go back? She has had this for almost a week.
