    October 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Well unfortunately only 6 out of 11 eggs I put into lockdown hatched. I'm thinking this might be my fault due to careless placement of the incubators... The desk they're on is in front of a window AC unit, and also next to the washing machine - I noticed a day or two before lockdown that the...

They're ameraucanas! Not very recognizable just out of the shell, haha

    October 2021 Hatch-A-Long

My chicks started pipping Saturday night and one finally popped out yesterday evening. Woke up this morning to two more! And I actually got pictures this time: Looks like a black and two blues so far! Eight eggs left, most of which have pipped.

I almost bought a new incubator yesterday and just barely managed to exercise some self control!

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Incubate/Hatch at Home?

My "other" reasons would be to 1. keep a closed flock and 2. breed for improvements.

    BYC's 2021 Spooktacular Halloween Hatch-Along!

I have some ameraucana eggs in the regular October HAL already, so I think for this one I will set some of my leghorn eggs. They're covered by a back-crossed 'olive egger' rooster, and I need to find out what egg color genetics he's carrying.

    October 2021 Hatch-A-Long

I candled last night on day 11, typically the only day I will candle. Deja Vu to my last incubation, once again I have 11/14 developing, with two duds and one early quitter. There is something odd going on in one egg that I have never seen. There is a healthy embryo but it seems to be...

    October 2021 Hatch-A-Long

Fourteen more eggs started today. All from blue ameraucanas! My trusty blue rooster is probably six years old now but he has such a docile temperament I feel it's worth it to keep breeding him. These are the first I've hatched for myself in a very long time due to having a baby last year...

I didn't even think of that but it would be worth a shot!

    September 2021 Hatch - A - Long

Well, my hatch is complete. 9/11 eggs hatched! Of course I had hoped for all eleven. One ameraucana egg never even pipped, and one marans egg pipped but never zipped. I did open the air cell on the marans just to make sure it wasn't alive and stuck in there. I don't have the heart to really...

Transporting Baby Chicks by Car - Question

I realized that my brooder heater fits perfectly inside an insulated HelloFresh box :D and I have a car power adapter. So these little ones will be under the heater until we get to the meetup point, and then switch to a smaller insulated box - I picked up some excelsior from the craft store...

Transporting Baby Chicks by Car - Question

I will definitely get NPIP certified when the time comes, I just feel I am not there yet. I am very much small time, only have 19 adult birds currently. Once I feel ready to expand, then I would want to be able to ship eggs or have customers from Texas, or wherever. For now I'm actually happy...
