***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello fellow Okies - I have a four week old golden polish chick - I think it is a rooster - with a fairly severe cross beak. He is the most outgoing chicken of our lot with great personality and lots of interest in people. We named him Wonky. We are not able to keep roosters and need to find...

    feather eating addiction!

We have four hens in an 8x12 closed chicken run. All four of them have lived together for about a year with no problems. In January, we had a blizzard that kept the hens "cooped" up for a couple of days. My husband was out of town and I"m pregnant and couldn't shovel out the snow. Even...

feather eating addiction - but not skin picking - how to stop?

how long are the eggs good to eat?

How long are the eggs safe to eat if kept in the refrigerator? Also, sometimes we miss an egg in the coop for a day... or two... How long can they be unrefrigerated and still be good to eat? What about in the summer heat?

Difficult Broody to Break - need help!

I guess Aunt Inez is definitely one of those "broody" hens that routinely goes broody. She did it twice in the winter time, but locking her out of the coop for a day worked like a charm because of the cold. She went broody once again during the spring, but we decided we'd let her sit on some...

    Help Identify My EE's Gender

Thanks to all for your input. They are getting too big for my run and coop so I am going to give away at least 4 of them this week - anyone in the OKC area that wants them is welcome. I have put them up on craigslist as well. I am going to keep number 3 for sure and maybe number 7 as there...

    Need help with their gender.....

Polish can be hard to guess at this age - when they are a little smaller you can get a pretty good idea of gender because the males have more of a mowhawk head crest and the females more of a cotton ball. I had a hen with a head crest similar to yours which was rounded when she grew up but...

Is there a way to tell Roos from pullets in 2 day old Jersey Giants?

When choosing my Cuckoo Marans I used the upside down trick - turn the chick upside down in your hand and the males will squirm and fight and the females will calm farily quick. I got 5 out of 6 hens with this method but its not a 100% thing. I may have gotten lucky as well.

    Help Identify My EE's Gender

I have 6 Mixed EE chicks. They began hatching on May 4 so they are all about 8 weeks old now. The mothers were Americaunas and the father was a mix that I dont know. The eggs were light green and I bought them from a local farm for my broody hen. We want to keep two of them but want to...

Broody Hatched Her First Chick (early) - How to prep the coop?

I bought my Broody hen some fertile eggs - didnt expect them to hatch until at least thursday. Came home today and a a little head is peeping out at me from under my hen. I have raised many chicks from the hatchery (day olds) but never tried to support a hen raising her own chicks. How do I...

    is this what broody is?

Aunt Inez is just shy of a year old. She's been laying for the past two months or so, and then the day before yesterday she started acting funny. She started sleeping at night in the nest box, not on the perch. Also, she spends all day in the nest box. When I open the door to check on her...

what's considered "excessive" when establishing an order?

I'm fairly new at this chicken business. Last spring we had three polish hens that grew up together from hatchlings. At about 10 months old, one died from a dog attack. We were worried that the remaining two would get too cold in the coop come wintertime, so we got two more chicks. We wanted...

    hen-pecked comb - almost detached

We have three chickens in a fairly large coop (not a space problem). Three different breeds, all around 6 months old. The cuckoo maran is the oldest, but is getting picked on by one or both of the others. She's already laying, the other two aren't yet. She has a bright red face and bright...

    3 week old polish...love the do's

I have been raising polish for a year now and the best indicator I have found between male and female at this young age is to compare their little afros. If it is straight up like a mowhawk it is likely a boy and if it is wider then it is likely a hen. This has proven a fairly good indicator...
