    Blind Hen Not Doing Well

Thank you for your insight on raising blind hens. Fingers crossed my hen's sight doesn't get too much worse towards the end of her life as she's not even 2 years old yet. We may have to transition her to a system like you're talking about.

    Blind Hen Not Doing Well

Thank you for your insight, I'll try to figure out a way to lower one of the perch bars if I can.. your idea of blocking off an eggbox might work since they all love to pile in one out of the four

    In distressed girl 🐓

Electrolytes! You can buy little packs of electrolyte mix for chickens and mix it with water. I'd recommend you get a syringe or dropper and try to get some down her beak. Just be sure you don't drop it into her airway(avoid water in the little hole in her mouth as it leads into her lungs)...

    Blind Hen Not Doing Well

I have a nearly 2 year old Black Austraulorp hen, Juno. About a month ago, we realized that she may suffer from partial blindness in both eyes (Reason unknown still) and its caused several issues we don't have solutions for yet. Feeding: Our feeding system is a pest proof bucket with 3 large...

    Bumblefoot??

Any suggestions of what I should do? We have a few vets around that can treat poultry but not super immediately.

    Bumblefoot??

I was outside watching my girls free range when I saw one of them raise their foot and start to pull off some dirt/poop. I noticed a small dark spot on her foot and immediately thought of bumble foot. After looking at her I made sure to check the rest of my girls and found that more of them have...

The butt of my silky chicken is red with blood or something stuck on it and in it

Can't see the problem area very well but it may be pasty butt. Its pretty common in chicks and can get serious quickly. Wipe the area with a warm, wet paper towel. Do not soak the chick please! They can get a cold and die very easily. Pasty butt is usually caused by stress and its common for...

    Bloody Combs and Tattered Feathers

I have a flock of 8 australorps and 2 of them now have bloody combs. I believe it is due to bullying by several members of the flock. I took the two victims and separated them from the rest for a night and treated their combs per the instruction of an online vet. I noticed today when I put them...

    Flock dynamic

Yes, the bottom is reinforced, There is a concrete base with sand on top of it so basically no way for predators to get under there. I will look into expanding the coop though, thank you for the advice.

    Flock dynamic

Unfortunately our coop/run isn't huge. Its big enough to stand/walk into but not a whole massive area for them to run around (or hide) from each other. The link below is the exact coop we have. They have 1 feeder and 1 waterer near the entrance of the coop with 3 feeding points on both...

    Flock dynamic

I'm sure this has been discussed to death but none of the previous answers exactly answer my question. I have a flock of 8 hens. They were separated, 4 in a group, from 1 day old to about 2 months for an agriscience project for my high school science class. After the project, Groups A and B...

    Hi there

Hi there, Im Heather. I've raised 8 australorps from chicks till the current (about 18 weeks). This is my first time raising chickens, originally reared for a high school agriscience project but kept all as pets. I joined byc due to some general concerns of my flocks every now and then.
