    Rooster ostracized by entire flock??

Thanks for the responses, everyone! :) After reading your comments I did an observation session with the flock and you were all correct; my rooster, Khufu, who was second in command is now the leader. That's politics for you, I suppose.

    Rooster ostracized by entire flock??

I have a strange situation.. It would appear that my entire flock turned on my alpha rooster (Mark Cluckerberg), dethroned him, and banished him. I missed the coup itself but arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. Mark wasn't bloodied or beaten, his nice tail plumage looked a little worse for...

I'm so sorry for your loss.. :( I had a somewhat similar freak event happen to our own flock. Sending lots of positive energy your way. <3

supervised free-ranging - can you truly protect from hawks?

We have quite the raptor population in our area, and will see a handful of hawks daily. The flock free ranges (consisting of 3 month old chicks and adults with one rooster), we set up small lean-tos throughout their area so they're never too far from cover (along with natural thicket that...

First Time Laying Hen Eating Eggs...?

Thank you for the advice! I'll definitely be implementing a free feed oyster shell station and I'll give the meat a shot! :)

First Time Laying Hen Eating Eggs...?

Hello, fellow flock mates! I come to you with a bit of a problem... I recently acquired two chocolate turkeys, a young male and a young female coming up on their first birthday. To our surprise, the hen began laying eggs! We collected the first three eggs without incident, quickly popping...

Thanks so much! :D Bald Eagles are common around here, so that’s good to know the netting will work against them.

That’s horrible.. I’m sorry that happened to you. :( I’ll definitely be investing in high quality netting. I don’t want to risk having raptors breach my defenses..

Gators‽ Being from the Northeast I never even thought of gators being a problem for people.. That’s one predator I would be terrified of dealing with!

Preliminary planning is putting the run at 100^2 ft (working on dimensions now) that has the option to open to a fenced area maybe 1,000^2 ft (that would be mobile and rotate seasonally). Though I’m very open to suggestions at this stage!

Oh lord, that’s a haunting image with the owl in there.. Terribly sorry to hear about your losses. :( Thank you so much for sharing, I’ll definitely make sure to get heavy duty netting. Do you recall what brand or specifications your good netting is?

I was discussing this with my partner last night, and after seeing more posts about safety I think I’m going to make Fort Knox... I like the idea of having a fortress for them to retreat to with a large run with the protected free-ranging. I want my ladies to have all the space they want, but...
