The best broody mom that sets for a long time

My Modern Game hen has been a great broody and a devoted mom.

New to hatching, a few questions

Hi, I just received some fertile Modern Game eggs in the mail and put them under our broody MG hen yesterday. She's very broody and growls at everyone approaching, puffs up her feathers and pecks. She's sitting on 6 eggs in her favorite place, which is under my son's bed. (don't ask...) We've...

Our Modern Game Hen laid her first egg!!

She is 8 months old and teeny tiny. I haven't expected much from her in terms of eggs, I've heard that Modern Games are not big layers. She was circling around the garden all day, hopping from flower pot to another, rustling in the bushes, then checked out the nesting boxes in the coop, not...

Chickens eating lead-based paint chips from house.

I don't have a solution but I just wanted to mention that I share the same problem with our 1926 house. The garage part still has old paint that is flaking off. We need to sand and repaint the whole garage but the job just seems overwhelmingly large. I've been sweeping of the chips as soon as I...

They're beginning to think they OWN the place!!

My polish chicken does this too. She will sneak into the house any chance she gets and peck at everything on the floor. She knows that my kids drop a lot of food around the dining room table. I appreciate her cleaning off the crumbs but I don't appreciate the poop... Recently she's been ganging...

Free brahma, EE, mille fleur and modern game cockerels in CA

Hello, I have 7 bantam cockerels that I need to give away because I can't keep roosters in my backyard. I'm located in Santa Barbara, CA. The cockerels are 6 weeks old and in good health. They've been fed organic chick starter. Let me know if you are interested in any of these: 2 buff brahmas...

Just so bummed about having too many cockerels and too few pullets

I didn't order from them because I wanted Modern Game and they don't sell any... but I'd be glad to pay that extra $10 just to get girls. Feeding a big bunch of boys gets expensive.

    advice on chicks appreciated

I would say keep the quiet ones, the loud ones will only get louder in time. If you want pullets, keep the ones that seem more shy. At least with my chickens I've noticed that the cockerels are always the ones that come to me first curiously when I put my hand in the brooder.

Just so bummed about having too many cockerels and too few pullets

Hear me out, I'm just so bummed. I ordered 10 chicks from Ideal. To my horror, I received 22 chicks -- they had put in 12 extra standard sized males as packing peanuts. After a while, I finally found a new owner for these 12 males on craigslist. I can't have roosters, I have just a regular city...

What are the genders of these three blue mille fleurs?

Thank you. Anyone need any cockerels?

What are the genders of these three blue mille fleurs?

I have three blue mille fleur d'uccle bantam chicks that are 6 weeks old. So far most of the 10 chicks I ordered from Ideal have turned out to be male. So I'm still curious about these three. Let me know what you think. The comb of chick 2 is not very visible in the pic but it is pale and...

A handsome EE, boy or girl?

Thanks. Do others agree? I can't believe that I got 10 chicks from Ideal and 7 of them seem to be cockerels. And I can't even keep them in the city.

A handsome EE, boy or girl?

Ok, here's another one of my 6-week old chicks. S/he is from Ideal and was sold as an Ameurcana, that is, an Easter Egger. A really handsome bird. I have a feeling that it is a "he" because of the size and some bossy male posturing type behavior in the brooder. He is bigger than most of the...

Three modern games. Boys or girls?

Hi, I have three silver blue modern games that are 6 weeks old. I have a feeling that the two gray ones are boys and the black one is a girl. What do you think? They are all very sweet and curious chicks. Blackie and first gray chick Second gray chick
