New to us Chicken; Roo or Hen. What breed do you think?

A close neighbor posted that this friend had been hanging around her property for the last few weeks. As the weather is getting cold here at night I went out to do a well check, and make sure she/he was in good health. The chicken is now in my heated garage (cause I am a sucker!) I am almost...

Help mean hen won’t let others eat!

We had the same issue with our two new girls and the "Alpha" hen. We did 2 things that seemed to sort them out. 1) We put in an extra feeder and threw a bunch of chick feed on the run floor just to make sure there was always an option for the new girls. 2) We ended up removing the alpha hen and...

Is she having any other symptoms? Foamy poops, lethargy, is she eating and drinking? Also, where do you live?

Dirty butt, odd feathers, Missing feathers

I thought about that; I will separate her out tomorrow morning and see about getting a sample from her. None of the dropping in the coop seem off. The coop is bone dry; the run is a little moist, but nothing terrible (we had a rain a few nights ago). She is eating and drinking fine, no lethargy...

Dirty butt, odd feathers, Missing feathers

Good evening folks; I was out hanging out with my girls when I spotted one of the girls had a dirty butt. I picked her up and had a look at her, and noticed that no only was it dirty, but it smelled bad and the feathers didn't look right. I took her out of her run and gave her a nice Bidet...

    Molting?

Good morning, I have 4 girls who are all close to a year old. The last week or so I have noticed a lot of feathers from our Dominique under their roost. There aren't many around their run. This morning I picked up Cutie (the Dom) who is a royal pain to catch and the vast majority of the feathers...

Girls still not roosting, new coop!

I dont imagine its a ventilation issue, there are vents running the top of the coop that are always open (think attic vents). I really do think they just prefer sitting on the ground over roosting, They were not able to roost as young chicks (they are now 7 months old) because their coop was too...

Girls still not roosting, new coop!

It has been a few weeks since my last update, and I am still struggling to get the girls to roost. I changed out the branches for much larger branches (about 2.75 in. diameter) if I place the girls on their roosts, they will stay there all night and not move, but if I just let them go into the...

Girls still not roosting, new coop!

Thank you all; I’ll try putting larger roosts in there. I haven’t put up the shutter by that window which overlooks their roosts, and it is very possible that they had a hawk or raccoon spying on them some night which has spooked them to the opposite side of the coop. Guess that will be my chore...

Girls still not roosting, new coop!

They are probably an inch in diameter. Suggestions on how big they should be? There are 5 girls.

Girls still not roosting, new coop!

I have just finished building my girls their new coop. They wouldn't roost in their old coop, I just figured it was a space issue. The new coop (see pictures) has plenty of room for all of them, and plenty of roosting space. For the first 4 days they roosted and loved it. I had to keep them...

New Coop almost ready for habitation: suggestions?

We do have a run, but mostly free range our girls. And I am considering taking the run out altogether since they are rarely in there. We don't have a lot of issues with day predators; and our German Shepherd is vigilant on border (we have a 6 foot fence) patrol.

New Coop almost ready for habitation: suggestions?

Good morning folks; I am putting the finishing touches on a new coop. I have 5 girls and am going from a coop which is about 9 square feet to the coop I built which is 36 square feet. Nothing is going to be the same in the new coop (since the previous coop is a piece of junk prefab from...
