I've heard favorelles aren't good layers too but mine didn't get the memo I suppose. I don't do anything special to increase egg production. It's definitely been my experience that it's only a few hours apart though. Guess I've just got a pair of weirdos haha
For context, I have a Salmon Favorelle named Queenie, and a Green Queen (lots of salmon favorelle ancestry) named Dolly.
When Queenie first started laying she used to lay two smaller eggs each day, and she did this through when she first began laying until she fully moulted for the first time...
An update: I had to have her put to sleep. It was worth letting her go peacefully after such a traumatic incident, and it turned out that what caused not just the prolapse, but her slow growing too, was a tumor. I guess it's better to know there was nothing that could be done and that it was...
@Eggcessive Thankyou for the advice; I'll keep the two together. I'll keep an eye on the older hens for now. They all seem fine. Unfortunately though, she prolapse suddenly and I have a vet visit for her tomorrow morning, it was the earliest I could get. I couldn't successfully treat it myself...
This morning I went to put my two 2mo pullets out in their pen, they've been sleeping in a fenced off wing in the main Coop to adjust them to sleeping outside and to safely get them used to the older hens and vice versa, which I've done before and is going fine, and there was blood. I looked up...
I went to sow some greens and pelleted clover for my girls in a fenced off area and noticed that they'd broken in when I locked them up. I thought I had it Houdini-proof. They're all in bed and seem fine. It wasn't much, just a thinly sown strip. How worried should I be?
I've got kind of a confusing situation going on. My five girls seem like they're hardly eating/drinking. I put out layer pellets in their bowl every morning (they only eat from bowls) and they always have fresh water. It doesn't get that cold here, I'm in the California Bay area, so the water...
I have a weird thing going on with one of my chickens, Queenie. She seems to be molting; her butt feathers are looking kind of loose and she has lost some. She just turned 16 months old, and is a Salmon Favorelle mix (my guess is part bantam because she's so little). She's vaccinated, and was...
I recently finished my chicken's new coup (14x8 run, 3x2x6 sleeping area/nest box) and yesterday I moved my 4 girls in. Last evening it was pretty uneventful. I did have to move them in to bed, but they seemed to be having a fun time exploring their new digs. This morning, things were okay, they...
I have a little hen who has, on multiple occasions, laid two eggs in one day. I've had at least three weeks where in a span of three days I've gotten 5 eggs from her. She lays a little larger than bantam sized eggs, even though she's a Favorelle, but she's an odd one the whole way round. She...
I tried the one wing clip thing after the avian vet here said they only needed one done. I didn't have any luck with it either. We're hoping to have the covered coup done before my two older girls that are just starting to molt get their wings back. They're constantly waiting and plotting for...
I have a little Cuckoo Maran, named Flo, who is relentless about escaping. At first she just toured infront of the fence, I have one of those flexible electric ones (no power to it of course, we're in suburbia, I just needed something I could shift around easily for the time being), and a little...
Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures of her eggs. (About a 4 on the Maran egg chart I found, though.) Yesterday she laid an egg similar in size to the others but a good one. But the day before she laid a huge egg (bigger than the other girls) with double yolks. Poor girl was absolutely freaking...
So I've kept her separated, still haven't managed to get a vet appointment, not till Monday. I've been checking her crop; she's eating, drinking fine, it's emptying just fine. She's stopped panting and her poop is normal again. I did give her another warm bath because I felt an egg. Today I let...
Okay, that's a really good idea, keeping her quarantined within the run. I have a decent sized pen I can use, and an old dog crate tray, so I'll rig something in the meantime till I can get something better.
Luckily she squats reliably when I go to inspect her so I'm going to go check her...
