Well, I've studied this chick and I see no difference in feathers. And I read advice given to another person asking about gender on fb--to not rehome "maybe roosters" until they crow. So I'm going to take that advice. The guy who sold the chicks will take "him" back and rehome if needed.
I bought these Black Australorp chicks from a local hatchery May 6th. They vent sex their chicks. I bought 6 pullets. Or so I thought.
Or perhaps it's a hen who is developing early? :)
This is the only one who has a wattle. I have studied the hen vs roo poster, but am a novice on feather...
I purchased these from a local hatchery on May 2. The guy said they were about a week old. They are in various stages of development, two being tiny. And then there's one who isn't bigger than the others, but what a tail has grown! This one also has blacker feathers. So, it's either older than...
Thanks. There's one with a little poop on her hind end, but that's the only guess. I have 5 two year olds and only one is laying regularly. Frustrating.
Oh my gosh! I spoke with a few friends with chickens and no one knew what this was. Thank you so much for the information. I don't know which hen it is. They all act peppy and all are eating well. None are overweight. The USA Browns are wirey hens. I got them from TSC.
I should add I have two year old ISA Browns and 7 year old hens too. After getting 4-5 eggs this winter, we are down to 1-2 now. They all look and act perfectly fine.
So--it's now October 21--and I'm happy to report Lace has been integrated into the flock with 100% success for a week. It was a gradual process, but it all paid off. Happy hens. :-)
