Well, we're going for it. Got a dozen more eggs under her in the doghouse ready to roll @ 11:00 p.m. Do you think 12 is too many for a standard cochin????
We've never had a broody before. Need advice. Cochin is in the nesting box that is a too small for her to effectively turn her eggs. She ends up in the common alley behind the nest and gets disturbed by traffic. We've lost a few eggs all ready. Could we start again with a fresh batch of eggs and...
I have a pair mille de fleurs. Mine are quite flighty but I got them as adults. They will go broody but mine will only go broody if she is in a coop all the time.
Rochester only has 4 heritage breeds this year. If you go to alberta chickens http://www.punbb-hosting.com/forums/Albertachickensetc/ and go to the hatcheries section, some people are ordering from Performance Poultry in Ontario. Several people are sharing boxes of 100, b/c they can be divided...
on my second try, we achieved a 93% hatch with a foam incubator. (that was out of the fertile eggs-if you count the infertile eggs then our hatch was only 75%. Being brandnew at this game, we are learning to develop an eye for candling. so in the meantime, I also use a digital kitchen scale and...
I decided to send him down the road today after he got me, too. However, does anyone have suggestions for a more docile breed? I have only heard from one person that dark brahma are better.

Australorps are capable of laying an egg a day. Ours are very close to that. They lay XL to jumbo brown eggs. The hens are very quiet. I have a neighbor who raises all types of heritage breed chickens for the local hatchery and he says that the Austalorps, despite their size, eat the least of...
I have a 2 yr. old and 4 yr old and a small flock that have the run of the yard. Our Australorp rooster(which we were told are quiet) will be 1 yr. old in May. He is going out of his way to run at, flap and peck their backsides as they turn away. Should they carry a stick-I've been told that to...
Yes the starter is fresh -as in newly purchased, but I should investigate to see if there is a production date on the bag. Anything that I have to watch for in regards to types of plain yogurt?
thank you,
Wendy
we incubated eggs. 31 out of 33 fertile eggs in our hobavator!!!!!!! Our partner in the project is raising the chicks in their bathtub. They put a light on a shower rod and lower it to get the right temp. They have said that since the floor is only newspaper, they can get constipated. It sticks...
we took a heinz tomato juice can and put a piece of innertube on top. The hole cut needs to be oval and slightly smaller than your egg. We cut a hole in the side the size of the neck of a light bulb. Put the bulb in the candler and screw into the socket on the outside. Works just great!
