    Liver Disease Help

Hey There, I just posted about my success treating my hen with what I could best figure out is liver disease. My hen was near death - not walking, labored breathing, fluid, not digesting, lethargy, and I treated her for 3 weeks with Milk thistle drops in the morning, wet food mash with flax seed...

    Sharing cure/remedy for liver disease

Hi All, I brought my almost 7 yr old barred rock/dominque mix hen back from death and wanted to share what I did in hopes it'll help someone else. My hen had all the symptoms of liver failure: labored breathing (not getting enough oxygen..purple comb), not being able to walk or stand, fluid in...

Labored breathing, green poop--looking for answers

I wanted to give an update in hopes it might help someone in the future. While my hen initially improved with my care, she eventually took a downturn and I opted to euthanize to end her suffering. She was clearly not getting better anymore and getting a little worse each day. When she wasn't...

Labored breathing, green poop--looking for answers

Thank you. I didn't take any photos and it's changed so much. This morning it looked almost normal. She doesn't have any bloat that I can see although she has always been a chunky chicken. Her crop is emptying. I will continue to monitor her. Thanks for the support and links to other articles!

Labored breathing, green poop--looking for answers

I know there are many posts about green poop and I've read them, but here I'm hoping to get new eyes on this illness. It's absolutely stumped me. My 6 year old Barred Rock/Dominique hen had dark green "dehydrated" poop and was lethargic starting last Tuesday (2/7). I isolated her and started...

Cracked and chipped beak - isolate or not while away for a week - what would you do?

Thanks for your reply! Well, the whole beak shell came off! Because it came off gradually, the underneath is not raw or bloody, but I can imagine that it is sensitive. I have decided to keep her separate for now. I don't trust her bully sisters. I've decided that she needs some alone time to get...

Cracked and chipped beak - isolate or not while away for a week - what would you do?

The hen at the bottom of the pecking order cracked her beak at the very top (near the nose) and chipped along the left side. The beak is intact, but like a broken fingernail, the crack could get jostled and might rip off. The chicken is in isolation and is on mush food, but soon to be hard food...

Hawk attack, hero rooster, and the circle of life

We're pretty sure it was a red tail. Thanks for these illustrations.

All the classic, bad symptoms -- worms??

I followed along. Thanks for posting the findings although it doesn't indicate the underlying cause. It's tough to do all you can...research, treatment, care, and more care to then lose the girl despite your best efforts. You did everything for her that you could. So sorry!

Hawk attack, hero rooster, and the circle of life

He was a fairly big bird and we were surprised he was cold when we found him. It happened somewhere in a three hour time when we were away. We wondered how bad the hawk was hurt. Been looking for it, but it hasn't hung around.

Hawk attack, hero rooster, and the circle of life

Thanks everyone! hugs. He fought off a hawk many years earlier (in another location) and won, but not this time. We usually let them out during the day and haven't had problems with big hawks. We had a nesting pair of smaller hawks last year that didn't seem a threat. As much as we are angry at...

I had the thought it might be juvenile. Thanks.

Hawk attack, hero rooster, and the circle of life

It was a fight to the death, and our beloved 6 yr old rooster, Woo, lost this battle. All the hens were saved. My husband came home to find Woo dead and the hawk nearby. The hawk was covered in blood and was barely able to fly out of the fence area. The hawk must have been injured and resting...

    Best incubator under $400?

Which one did you go with it? I'm also in the market for an incubator.

Rooster going through the preening motions but not making contact with feathers ??

Yes, I feed a layer ration since most of the chickens are hens. It makes sense that wouldn't be the right nutrition needs for a rooster. hmmm.
