Thank you so so much for your opinions. I really hope you guys are right. Both of them were bought to replace one of my original flock members that became egg bound. I'm already attached to them but would have to send them back if they were cockerels.
Cedar has oils in it that are supposed to be bad for chickens. I use the deep litter method with pine shavings and Diatomaceous Earth. I "stir" the litter at least once a week, and clean beneath the roosts before I do that. I've noticed that most of the filth accumulates directly under the roost...
I got quite a surprise this morning when I went out to clean the coop and deliver treats. My Silkie was up in a nesting box! I have no clue what would inspire her to lay in the proper place after months of laying on the coop floor. I collected her egg and told her she was a good girl.

I think the talk I had with my girls a few days ago actually worked. No one had laid in weeks and I was sick of them free loading. I explained that the first step would be no more watermelon, cheese omelets, or meal worms. The next step might be soup (I'm such a liar!).
I have three pullets right now; an Orpington, a Delaware, and a Barred Rock. They are 18 - 19 weeks old this week , I'm not positive because I bought them at a few months old. The Delaware and BO have very red combs, and the Delly has red wattles but is def. a girl. My two grown hens are bantams...

As a dog lover this stuff makes me soooo angry! How can people be this irresponsible? They put their dogs lives at risk in innumerable ways everytime they let them roam. Not to mention they make the lives of good dog owners even harder. I'm so sorry you guys are having problems with...

Honestly? I'd lie my butt off about the "dangers" of incubators and how a child could easily get electrocuted. Explain to your sister how irresponsible you feel she was to put her child at such great risk. Then put a lock on the door. It's easily done and would stop any further issues.

That is brilliant!
We do something similar here. I've found that gatorade bottles with the top cut off are perfect for the hole in the plastic waterer I use. Certainly has come in handy in the 100 degree heat we've had this week. I only provide water and food outside in the run. Then...

I have spoken to someone who does kitten rescues. The kittens will go to farmers who have mice etc. in their barns. I am not too sure what happens to the mother, she may either be put down or spayed and go to the barns too.
I agree with you in terms of the damage they do to wildlife -...
Hunh! My silkie must be an anomaly. She's smart and sweet. Figured out the ramp and the roost very quickly despite the fact she had been raised in a rabbit hutch set up. Now, I briefly owned a Polish hen that was so dumb and mean I rehomed her within a month.
