Hi everyone. I have 9 hens, no 2 are the same. Pretty much everyone gets along well. There are a couple who get pecked a little bit, but it's not that big of a deal. I built up my flock in stages, so they all came in at different times. The last hen I bought is a blue egg layer and she is...

Not really--if you give them a thorough washing it removes the bactericide "bloom" the hen has deposited on the shell. At that point it is a good idea to refrigerate them. On the other hand unwashed eggs can stay on the counter until you need them so when you're ready then you can...
I got 10 chickens and am free ranging in my back yard. Had some issues with them going to the neighbors', but solved it
Anyway, I have 4 nest boxes, but they all lay in the far left box! I get about 6 eggs a day (as the hens are calming down and getting settled) but usually I find a broken one...
I've decided on these chickens: Ameraucana Delaware Marans Plymouth Rock Rhode island and Welsummer
Does anyone know where I can order them? I live in Central Kentucky.
Yeah I'm wanting mixed varieties of birds. Maybe even 8 different kinds! Just wondering what would be good for me (a beginner with a family), would be nice, and would lay colorful eggs (like green blue whatever).
High production isn't a big priority. It'll cover our family and more. This is just fun
I'm about to buy about 8 chickens. I was wanting some that would be good for home, and would have some colored eggs. If you all have any suggestions of good breeds for the home? They will have plenty of space for free ranging.
If you all need any other information, I can provide that
Hey, I'm getting my first chickens and we decided that we couldn't build a coop. So I thought I'd buy one. I selected this one (http://farmnyard.com/Chicken-Coop-Large-Capecodder-Dual-Pen-6-15-birds-Large-CpCoddr-Dual-Pen.htm) for my needs, what do you all think?
When the weather is bad, should I keep my chickens cooped up (haha) or should I let them make the choice to go outside or not, and leave their door open?
If I use a sand floor in my coop, will it stay cold in the coop? The page on using sand floors says that's one of the plusses in the summer, but is it a minus in the winter?
Also, have you all had good experiences with sand flooring?
I live in Kentucky, so it's not too cold, but will it be too...
