I would think that olive oil in small amounts--or on a small area-- would be okay and would not cause problems like covering her in oil would. I used olive oil on a cotton ball to clean our little ones' pasty butts, and it seems to do fine (now that I think of it, I did the same with our human...
Sorry to hear about your chicks--one of ours had a run-in with our dog a month or so ago, and it didn't end well, but it sounds like the one you're nursing is hanging in there.
We took ours to the vet, who gave her some antibiotics by mouth and some antibiotic ointment. I don't know the dose...
We have a small backyard flock. I just noticed tonight when tucking them in for the evening that our two Buff Orpingtons (10 months old) have a big patch of feathers missing from their bottoms!
They've been acting just fine, and I don't think that they're laying less (we've had a couple of...
We live in northern Arizona, where it is really cold at night. Even with five feet of snow, our buffs were laying about 5 eggs a week each. They are beautiful, cold-hardy, and just the sweetest hens around.
If we get more chickens, I will get more buff orpingtons. We love them!
Thank you all, kind folks, for your advice. She died this afternoon. I wonder if she had some internal injuries that were not visible. Poor girl. I appreciate the support, though--thanks.
I've been reading all the previous posts from others whose chickens have had similar injuries, but I'm wondering if I've done the right thing with ours.
Yesterday, Jasmine (9 month old Australorp--sweet girl and a wonderful layer) jumped the fence in the garden and was bitten by our dog (he's...
i have a few bags of wheat berries that we got from our CSA this past spring. Can I give them to the chickens? Can they handle the whole grain, or should it be sprouted or cooked first (my husband thinks I'm crazy--cooking for the chickens!).
Thanks!
I think I will get a remote thermometer--that way I don't have to be climbing up on a chair to look in the window in the middle of the night to make sure everyone seems comfortable!
Our chicks are 5 weeks old and moved this week from the brooder to the coop outside. They seem to be loving all the fresh air (and bugs!).
Temperatures in the daytime are in the 70-80 range, but it goes down as low as 40s at night. We have a 75 watt bulb on in the coop, and they seem warm...
Good luck with your new flock!
Yeah, I'd read that chicks had a high mortality rate, so we ordered 8, thinking we'd have 4 survive. Here it is, four weeks later, and they are all running around in their coop looking happy and healthy.
Mypetchicken.com has a free e-book on their website that...
We have 8 hens which are now 4 weeks old.
they have been in the brooder in the garage, and I'm thinking of moving them out to the coop/run. The coop is about 4X3 with an attached run (might be a little small once they get bigger--we didn't think they'd all survive the trip and their first few...
Our plywood brooder has an open top and walls about 18 inches high.
Some of our week-old chicks have been looking like they are going to go "over the wall", and a few managed to get to the side and perch on it.
What do folks recommend as a covering? A plain old window screen (looks like it...
