    Jersey Giant Death

Hi thank you both for your response. Sorry I was out of town for a bit. All the other chickens (5) seem to be doing great! Except the other Jersey Giant (We has two) all of a sudden the started to "crow" in the morning! As soon as I let them out for the day, she comes out crowing!! My...

    Jersey Giant Death

Hello, We had one of our Jersey giants suddenly die! One of the sweetest girls. One morning, when I went to let them out of the coop, she was up on the roost, then later when I went to check on them she was in the corner of the coop. She did not seem able to get up, so we picked her up and...

Intoducing new chicks to existing flock

Thank you all. We will plan to keep them in for at least 8 or 9 weeks. I have heard that putting them in at night when the older ones are sleeping is a good idea. It will be a long night for me. I am really nervous, In would like two more, but wonder if it is worth it, seems so hard on the...

Intoducing new chicks to existing flock

Hi all, I am sure there have been threads about this already, but I cannot find any! We have 4 girls that will be two years old. They have been raised together and get along great with each other, us and our dog. They have a pen but free range around the yard during the day. We are hoping to...

    chickens in the garden

Can chickens kill a lawn? We let our chickens free range around the backyard, which results in chicken poop on the lawn. The lawn looks terrible! There are several possible reasons, but I know that chicken poop is very strong, I was hoping that the lawn could take it. Any thoughts?

    Is broody always bad?

Thanks for the reply. We don't want anymore chickens right now. She is just over a year old, so I guess we just wait it out for a bit. I am hoping by taking her off the nest several times a day, and removing all the eggs she will get over it. Or I guess we will have to put her in a grate for a...

    Is broody always bad?

Hello! We have 4 hens all laying very well this spring. We have them as pets and for the eggs. No roosters. My question is about one of our hens being broody. I left the inside light on over night last week and I think that got them a bit out of sorts. One hen, our Jersey Giant had been...

No sign of any winter change!

We have four girls. 1 Americana, 1 Dominique, and 2 Jersey Giants. The Americana and the Dominique are still laying (slowed down a bit). But the Jersey's have totally stopped! One of the Jerseys is molting on her neck, so funny looking! They are all about 10 months old. How long do they...

    Cats after chickens?

Thanks for all the great advise and funny posts. The cat wasn't around today, he is a small guy with a collar so belongs someplace. I will keep a watch. We do have a dog, but the chickens chase him around the yard! He loves his chickens! Runs around like a kook...

    Cats after chickens?

Thanks everyone. We will keep them locked up (they will NOT be happy about this!) But we will let them out when we are with them, or if our dog is out with them. He is very good with them. (Actually I think he is a bit scared of them!

    Cats after chickens?

Our four chickens free range around the yard during the day, and are locked up safely at night. This evening around dusk, my husband looked out the window and saw a neighborhood cat "stalking" the chickens! Should we be worried that this cat could hurt our chickens? I know to be careful of...

Sleeping in nest boxes and other questions!

Thanks! We will try blocking the boxes at night , opening them in the morning. Also leaving them in the coop until they learn where to lay the eggs!

Sleeping in nest boxes and other questions!

Hi, Our four girls are now 19 weeks old, getting red in the face and I think might be getting ready to start laying YEA!! So my questions are: 1. They were all sleeping on their roost, but now they are all sleeping in the nesting boxes (three boxes). Should I block the boxes for a while...
