Regarding the dust, not sure if its the same, but I had a parrot for a while and when her new feathers came in, the sheath the new feathers were cased in would break open and it created a tremendous amount of dust.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Did you ever figure out what made her sick because my Lefty (2 year old leghorn) is exhibiting the same symptoms. I never would have believed how attached we can become to them!

How far does the skirting stick out from the run? I've seen a fox circling our coop/run for the past 3 mornings. I'm too afraid to let the chickies out before going to work and now they're being held hostage until someone comes home to let them out! I hate this.
